Hyde, Sabrina, and Red sit in the kitchen, quietly eating their breakfast as they listen to Kitty speak on the phone. Sporting her nurse uniform, she seems distressed as she converses, and the three gradually grow worried. "Oh. So she's gonna be out the whole week? Well, you don't drink and go ice fishing. That is just common sense!" There's a pause, and Kitty makes a face like she doesn't want to say her next words, but she does so anyway. "No, no, no. It's fine. I'll be happy to pick up her shifts. Okay. Uh-huh. Bye."

Red places his fork down upon hearing about her doing more time at work than she needs to, not fond of how stressful it may become for her. "Oh, jeez. Kitty, you work so hard as it is. I don't want you working double shifts."

Kitty makes her way to the table, joining them at last. "Well, Red, we need the money. It's not every week that Charlene's gonna get septicemia from a rusty hook. We have gotta take advantage of that."

He's still reluctant, stabbing his food in a disgruntled manner. "Well, I don't like it."

She lifts a finger in remembrance. "Oh, you know, if I'm gonna be working nights, I'd better put some meals together for you, Sabrina, and the boys. Oh, better yet." She faces her daughter, an expectant look washing over her face. "Sabrina, honey, you think you can put what I've taught you to good use and cook 'em something simple?"

She swallows her food, nodding with a tight-lipped smile. She's always been better at the baking, but she'll put in some more effort if it means it'll make it easier for her mother. "Sure, Mom. I'll try my best."

Red chuckles, amused that she's not even considering his assistance. "Oh, come on, Kitty. I'm not helpless. I think I can get these guys some dinner. Sabrina, you do not have to lift a finger."

Hyde seemed okay with Sabrina being the cooking option, but upon Red's insistence, he turns to Kitty with a desperate look, as if pleading with her to change his mind. She notices, but she does nothing of the sort, evidently not wanting to discourage the man. "Okay. Yeah. Um . . ." She pats Hyde's shoulder, pushing a sweet smile at her husband. "I'm sure you'll be great."

Eager to leave, she grabs her purse and rushes through the sliding glass door.

Sabrina takes a sip from her mug, brows raised, as she wonders whether any of them will get sick these next few days. Hyde lightly kicks her leg underneath the table, as if urging her to try once more, and so she does. "Uh, Dad, you know, it's really no problem for me to cook—"

"No, honey. I'll cook. I'm not incompetent. You two don't need to worry."

She and Hyde deflate. "Okay." After a moment's silence, she murmuringly adds, "The fire extinguisher's in the garage." Red pries his eyes from the newspaper to send her a flat look. She smiles nervously, raising her hands. "Just a reminder."
