Chapter 2

Big black spiders came crawling out as the door opened. Anna jumped back a bit and Josh caught her, which made Anna blush deeply. Josh propped Anna back to her feet and led her into the house. Josh got out his flashlight and clicked the on button. He waved the light around the front room that they were in. Something different flashed. It was covered in cobwebs but seemed use full.

“Over there!” shouted Anna. “A switch!”

Josh walked over to the switch and tried to flick it towards the ‘on’ side. Nothing happened.

“If there are any lights in this house, they are most likely not working, or burnt out.” Josh pointed out. “But hey, we got this flashlight.” He said.

Anna looked around again half hoping that the switch did something, half looking for more things to find in this humongous place. She spotted a door and wanted to know what leaded into it. “Over here,” Anna said to Josh pointing to the door, “let’s go in here.” Josh followed after her. Anna looked at the door knob, her hands, then up at Josh. Josh jumped realizing he had forgotten about her burnt hands and opened the door for her. They walked in and saw a used composition book sitting on a queen sized bed that had a red bed spread. The floors were white carpet but it had strange red stains on it. The curtains were burnt umber and the windows were broken and wind blew in making the room feel cold.

Anna grabbed Josh’s hand and dragged him to sit with her on the bed. Anna picked up the journal that was sitting there and read it. It read, ‘Dear Journal, Today, Marcus wrote me again. He said that he was glad that I could see him but I really can’t. I can only feel him but I hope that I can see him in the near future. Also, today at school, these girls came up to me and said, “Hey ghost girl whats wrong with your eyes?” I don’t know what they are talking about. (Oh and by the way, for any future readers, I have blue eyes but people say they think I look blind.) I really hope that people can except me for who I am… Not what I look like…’  Anna passed the book to Josh and he read it.

“This must have something to do with that letter we read.” Said Josh. “Where are the others? Anna grabbed her backpack and frantically ripped it open, snatching out the remaining letters.

“They have the same return address…” said Anna, “The return address says, ‘The past of the life of Marcus Crilia’ The past? What happened to him?” Anna half asked herself and half asked Josh.

“Open it!” exclaimed Josh

Anna tore open the envelope and took out the letter. She read it aloud, “Dear Mary, you wrote in your journal that you cannot see me but I know you can. Don’t you know what I look like? I hope you can see me writing this letter! I am sitting right next to you! Please say something if you see me. Oh I just showed the paper!!! Please Mary no! I just hope tha-“ The letter stopped.

“What does the rest say?” asked Josh.

“It just stopped.” Said Anna, “after that there are just scribbles.” The letter also had wet spots on it where Marcus cried over Mary not seeing him. Josh picked up the third letter. He opened it and read it in his head, ‘Dear Mary, I know you did not get my last letter because I was taken but I sure hope that you can get this one. Mary, I am trapped! He has taken me! Please help! I love you! Please write me back, Marcus’ Josh put the letter in front of Anna’s face.

He pointed out to her, “Anna look! It said that something – someone took him… What do you think that means...?”

“I don’t know…” replied Anna. “But that’s all the letters we have.” Anna picked up the journal again and opened to the second page. She read it out loud, “Dear Journal, I have not heard from Marcus in a while. Sometimes I worry that he stopped writing to me. I just hope that someday, we can be together. I really do want to see what he looks like and hear what he sounds like. I just want it to happen soon. I have tried to tell my mother about Marcus but she will not listen to me. She hates me. She said that if I want to see him so much that I should kill myself to see him in the after-life. She does not understand us. Well I can only hope that everything goes okay with Marcus. Thanks journal, you help me  relieve my stress and worries about the world, Mary.” Anna closed the book.
