Chapter 3

Anna got up out of Josh’s arms and wiped the tears from her eyes. “I’m sorry,” she said, “I just got so overwhelmed and I had to let it out…” she Explained to herself and kind of to Josh as well even though he already knew because he was experiencing the same feelings. Anna pushed herself of the bed and looked around. A familiar crash was heard again coming from a room that they had not been in yet. There was a long corridor leading to yet another large room. This time, Josh led the way through the hall and opened the door. Inside, There was a big bathtub that looked like it could be a swimming pool. The room had a yellow glow like most bathrooms do. The tub was also a shower and had a transparent curtain under a fancy one that looked hand sewn and hand embroidered. There was a toilet in the room and it was pure white marble but there was no water in the toilet bowl, it must have evaporated. There were four sinks in one counter that all were beautifully carved and looked very expensive. Yes, imagine this room only now, it is horribly dirty and the curtains are ripped and bathtub has rat bones in it.

Anna wrinkled her nose looking disgusted. Josh stepped in and tried to flush the toilet but nothing happened. Either the toilet was broken or there was still no running water as it was before in the kitchen. Anna felt something drip on her face and touched it. She looked at her hand and there was a distinct red color on her fingers. She looked up and on the wall was blood dripping through the walls. It wasn’t old blood either or it wouldn’t have fallen on Anna.

“Josh blood from the ceiling just fell on me.” She sounded panicked as she talked.

“Its okay, it’s probably just another animal” said Josh trying to reassure poor Anna about the strange things that had been happening.

“We should go up stairs and take a look.” Said Anna, still holding her cheek navigating herself and Josh to where she thought the stairs might be. Finally, after walking around the house they found the stairs and went up. “We need to go to where we saw the blood on the ceiling, it should be on the floor of where ever we saw it.” Said Anna pointing towards a door that led to something that might have been a closet or something. “Get your flashlight out.” Said Anna, “We’ll probably need it in there. Josh swung his backpack to the ground and took the flashlight out of the front pocket. Anna and Josh walked through the door as Josh turned on the flashlight. It didn’t turn on so he hit the top where the batteries were and it flicked on and off until it stayed on.

Josh pointed the light towards the floor and they saw a dead girl. She was young and they knew that it wasn’t Mary because this mansion was very old and abandoned for a long time and by now, the body would have been a pile of bones or at least rotting some. Anna walked up to the girl and put the girl’s hair behind her ear. She looked at her eyes. They were a hazel color and they looked so pretty in the light of the flashlight. Her eyes her wide open and looked possessed. The girl’s hair looked blond in the pieces where the light was but her hair looked black where it was engulfed by darkness. Anna got up and stood next to Josh. I tear dripped down her face but she really didn’t notice. When she wiped the tear away, she looked at her hand. There was blood on it. Just where she had wiped the tear away. Did I just cry blood? Thought Anna to herself.

Anna tuned to Josh and he jumped back in fright. “What’s wrong?” asked Anna, “Are you afraid of me or something?” Josh dropped the flashlight out of fright and started to run. Anna started running after him, realizing how strangely slow she was running. Soon, everything turned black and Anna flashed back to when she was little. She was sitting in her big cozy chair by the fireplace. This was before her and her mother moved to the tiny house. Anna was sitting in the chair wrapped up in a big green blanket. She was reading a book that was so fuzzy she couldn’t tell what it said. Her black hair was in a long braid and the fire made it gleam bright and warm. Anna squinted her eyes as a gust of wind blew into her face. She was knocked back off of the chair and rolled out of the blanked. Frightened, she got up and ran out the door. It was day time so her hair shined blonde and beautiful. She still ran as far as her little feet could take her. Suddenly, her whole world was swallowed by darkness but her hair still shined a vibrant white blonde which was strange since she was in the dark. The wind was still blowing at her face and she fell backwards.

Anna sat up quickly as she awoke. She was back in the real world. “What happened to me?” asked Anna to Josh, a frightened look in his face. “Josh answer me! What happened?” Josh still stood sat above her with horror in his face and pushed himself back onto the floor and sat there with his arms wrapped around his knees. “Josh answer me!” Anna now started to whimper as she sat there. She didn’t know what was wrong with her friend. She got up and started walking towards another room and opened the door. Inside is was simply mirrors. All the walls were mirrors and Naomi and Mary must have used this room just to look at themselves. Anna looked at herself in the mirror. She looked like her normal self but then again, people always saw she looked different then what she saw herself in the mirror as.

Her eyes had blood around them though but that was just from the strange tear she had cried earlier. Also from the girls blood that dripped on her cheek through the ceiling. Anna didn’t understand. What had frightened Josh? What had made Anna faint or fall back or what was the wind blowing on her in her strange flashback? Anna walked back to where Josh had been but he was gone. Anna reached into her backpack where she had kept her radio and spoke., “Josh?” she said into the radio. He didn’t reply. “Josh whatever I did or said, I’m sorry. I must have been knocked out. Please just respond to me.” Anna put the radio down and waited. She heard a boy crying down stairs in Mary’s room. It sounded like Josh but she couldn’t be sure. Anna put her backpack back on her back and ran down the stairs to Mary’s room.

She saw Josh on the bed with his head in his hands crying. She sat down on the bed next to him. “Josh,” said Anna, “What happened to you? Are you okay?” Josh looked up.

“Anna where are you?” Josh said this like he had no idea the Anna was sitting right next to him in the same room.

“Josh I’m right here!” shouted Anna. Josh looked up and hugged her.

“Anna! I can’t see you but I felt you sit on the bed. What happened? After you looked at the little girl, you just fell and started shouting at me.” Josh stopped his crying and wiped face with his sleve.

“Josh I’m sorry! Can’t you hear me?” Anna said sounding very worried.

“Yes… I can hear you know. But I can’t see you anymore.” Said Josh making Anna very confused.

“Why can’t you see me?” She asked.

“Look at my eyes.” Replied Josh, trying to guess where Anna was. Anna tilted head so that he was looking at her. She looked into his eyes and she saw gray. He looked blind.

“Josh have you gone blind?” asked Anna sounding terrified that her best friend could have been blind.

“I don’t know,” said Josh, “I can see everything else but not you. Anna why can’t I see you?” Josh sounded very upset.

Anna hugged him and said, “It’s okay, we’ll just have to try to move on.” Josh’s eyes suddenly turned back to his natural color. He blinked and rubbed his eyes.

“I can see you fine now. I don’t know what happened.” Said Josh now very confused as well as Anna. Anna looked at him. He could obviously see her now, he was looking into her eyes.

Anna looked at the path that leaded to the stairs. “Lets not go up stairs again.” She said, thinking that’s where the blindness had come from. Anna got off the bed and stood up looking for the journal. She found it and flipped to the third page that they hadn’t read yet since she had skipped pages, looking for evidence of Mary killing Naomi or Naomi killing Mary. “Dear Journal,” Anna started to read, “I havn’t heard from Marcus in a while. I have not even felt him here either. I really hope that I hear from him soon. Sometimes, I feel like I want to die just to see what Marcus looks like. I still love him just feeling him seems like enough for me but I still want to hear his voice and see him walking- flying about. Well, my mother says she is going to take away my books if I talk about Marcus again but I say, let her. I don’t think that will do much damage to me since I have this journal to write in to let my emotions out.”

Josh looked at Anna, “So maybe Mary killed herself? I mean she said she wanted to die so she could see Marcus.” Said Josh

“Maybe,” started Anna, “But later it says that she wanted to kill her mother instead.”

“I don’t know…” said Josh. Anna closed the journal and put it in her pack so she could read it even after they left this strange place.
