Her eyes widened in surprise.
"An affair?! whatever do you mean?! You're cheating?!"
She couldn't believe her ears, perhaps she heard it wrong? no, it couldn't be, there's no way the angelic Jen would say such horrific words.
Jen's eyes become large and teary, "Please listen to me, you are my best friend, I have no one else to go to, this is the only way I can save myself from that evil husband of mine and as my best friend you are the only one I can rely on."
Her body was shaking, she looked terrified and on the verge of crying.
"Jen," Adeline reasoned for a moment, perhaps there was a reason behind all of this, "please tell me, why are you having an affair?"
Jen held onto Adeline's hand with a shaky voice, making Adeline's pale cheek rosy red.
"My husband has been abusing me and the children," her oceanic eyes look down with hands balled up, "every night he would drink a bottle of wine and become incredibly intoxicated, I would always try to stop him, but when I do, he would raise his voice, throw bottles or chairs at me, he even tried to harm the children once they are awakened by his loud voice."
Slowly like snow drifting in the air, her beautiful tears drop one by one, "Please Adeline," her melodic voice tingles Adeline's ears, "Can you help me to get away from my husband? He's too powerful! I know what I'm doing is awful as a wife but I have no other way to run away unless I have help from the Crown Prince, only you can save me Adeline so please."
Her pleas and adoring face made Adeline weak with any reasoning, like a doll controlled by a siren's luring lullaby, "Ok, I'll aide you Jen. I will not spill a single thing to a soul, your secret affair is safe with me."
Jen's smile was so bright, her tears and happy face made Adeline feel so warm to know, she can protect and save her friend even if it is deceitful.
Besides, Adeline owes Jen way too much, she opened a new world for her and her family's abuse has eased up thanks to her powerful connection with Jen.
She swore she will help Jen through thick and thin.
However, her mind began changing.
At first, she was wary of Wilhelm and the strange coincident meeting at the library, she was afraid of him knowing his abusive way and even hated him.
But things started to not add up, something changed.
His sympathy towards the abused character in her stories seemed genuine, but at the same time, she couldn't believe it, after all her own family are also deceived by faking smiles and making seem everything was ok in the family and was able to cover up their track.
Until the book club was formed.
The book club once took a 1-week tour to check out the scenes that were described in the books that Adeline once checked out before, they always left a strong impression on her and when surrounded by like-minded people, who were just as young as her, brilliant, intelligent and truly adore books. They also were left with strong impressions just as it did to Adeline.
They even checked out new sceneries and visited bookstores that had rare books they couldn't find even in the royal library, they were even able to check out seminars that broaden their knowledge on a variety of subjects.
It was proven a great learning experience and a bonding trip, which of course was all at the expense of Wilhelm who funded everything.
It was difficult for Adeline not to get comfortable in such an environment, she was still wary of Wilhelm but when he speaks to her of familiar subjects she couldn't help but pipe up with excitement, all her knowledge of the books she loved was able to bounce off well to everyone around her, even Wilhelm.
