Chapter 4

1 year later

"Get up!" Chisaki yells as I hit the floor, for what feels like the hundredth time, after taking a hit from him. "It's been a whole year already! You should be improving by now but you're still weak! Useless brat!" It's been almost a full year since Eri and I came to stay with our grandfather. Two more weeks to complete the year, and less than one week before I turn 13. Not that I expect there to be any kind of celebration. Grandpa hasn't been around much so we've mostly been with Chisaki or Kurono. The last several months have been busy. Once the summer had ended, grandpa enrolled me in homeschool so I wouldn't fall behind in my studies. But between the training and the school work I've barely had a moment to myself. Everyday has been filled with Chisaki pummeling me or exploding me with his quirk in his 'attempt' to train me. It's been the same routine each day. Wake up, eat a quick breakfast, get beat by Chisaki, take a small break as I'm forced to sit and do my homework. Then meet with Kurono, who helps me with my daily workout routine in the gym. Sometimes he challenges my brain as well, giving me new puzzles he comes up with or some mazes that challenge my brain and body. He makes things interesting at least. However, by the end of the day I'm exhausted and sore. I barely even get to see Eri since they keep me so busy all the time. Kurono assures me that she's okay and when I do see her she also says she's good but I can't help but worry.

Thud! I hit the wall this time as I'm thrown, like a toy, away from Chisaki. I hit the ground with my fist in my frustration, only further damaging my knuckles. *Dammit! I'm never gonna be strong enough at this rate! I can only ever manage a few hits. He doesn't even look tired!* Over time, being around Chisaki and some of the others I'd picked up a bad habit of cursing especially when I'm frustrated such as right now.

"Can't you give me a fucking break! How am I ever gonna learn anything if you don't tell me what I'm doing wrong? You don't even give me time to think, dammit!" I scream at Chisaki.

"Complaining won't change anything and how are you supposed to improve if I give you all the answers. Use that head of yours! I know you can too so don't lie, I've seen how fast you figure out Kurono's challenges. So figure this out too!" I stand up again feeling the ache in my body from the new bruises. *Think Tsuyoka, how can you get around his stupid defense? Maybe I've been too focused on trying to cancel his quirk? After all, he has to touch something to use it. I just have to absorb enough energy from him…* My thoughts are cut off as Chisaki touches the wall closest to him making spikes burst out of the wall from behind me.

"Shit!…" Flinching, I curse as one of the spikes graze my back and another slices my right arm, both drawing blood. skillfully, I dodge over the other spikes intentionally making it seem as though I'm unaware of how close I'm getting to Chisaki. But just when he thinks he's got me again I suddenly drop to the ground sliding as I grab his leg with my hand and pull it out from under him. Slam! Chisaki hits the ground with a grunt and I deactivate his quirk. *I actually got the jump on him? Holy shit! I actually got him!* I'm momentarily caught off guard by my small victory, shocked that my plan had worked. It's short lived however. Chisaki swiftly gets back on his feet and strikes with a hard kick. Raising my uninjured arm to block the kick, I yelp when the kick lands much harder than I expected, hitting me square in the head. Then everything falls into darkness and I'm out cold.
