chapter seventeen the new normal ⎯⎯⎯⎯
"Okay, so your sister's pregnant? how'd that happen?" Hanna asked as she and the girls were in Emily's bedroom. They were trying to decipher a note that Toby had given to Spencer. While Emily, Spencer, Hanna and Adalind were on the bed, Aria was sitting in Emily's window seat, away from everyone. "I figure pretty much the usual way." Spencer responded. "Mhm, it's not really a how question, it's more of a why question." Emily added, causing Spencer to sigh. "Well, I mean, I guess Melissa could have gone all maternal but I doubt it." she said.
"Ah! This is so creepy." Hanna shuddered, making Adalind laugh softly. "So where are they now?" She asked. "Philadelphia, shopping." Spencer answered. "What do you think this means?" Hanna asked. "I don't know, but Toby wanted us to have it." Spencer responded as she took the note out of a notebook that she had brought with her and held it up to her computer screen. "There." she remarked, clicking on something and all the girls leaned in to see it, Adalind leaning over the side to see it, since she was sitting at the end of Emily's bed.
"It's in braille, so.." Spencer trailed off, looking at the note and the screen. Adalind looked over at her cousin, who was looking towards them. "You want to see Ari?" she asked. "No. I can see just fine from here." Aria responded, making Adalind look at her confused before refocusing on the note again. "Okay," Spencer muttered and she clicked a pen. "The first letters a B," Spencer told them as she wrote it down in the notebook. "A, it's an A." she spoke, writing down the second letter. "I think it's gonna tell us who 'A' is." Hanna remarked, but Adalind wasn't so sure about that.
"D?" Spencer said, confused as she wrote it next to the A in the notebook. "B-A-D." Emily read it out. "Bad." Hanna said, annoyed and sighed. "That's the whole message? Bad?" Spencer said. "What's it supposed to mean?" Adalind asked. "It means, you got punked." Aria let out, making them look at her. "Toby doesn't trust us, I don't blame him." She added, making Adalind sigh, she didn't know what Aria's problem was, but she would figure it out. "No, I don't think he'd mess with us like this." Emily tried to reassure herself and the girls.
"You'd be surprised what people are capable of." Aria said bitterly, staring at Hanna. "You guys, we have to figure this out, this might be a joke, but it could be something real." Spencer said. "Well, look, either way, Toby's not the enemy." Hanna remarked just before Aria moved to get up and grabbed her stuff. "You know what, guys? I'm gonna go." she said before walking out of the room. "What was that all about?" Spencer asked, "How should I know?" Hanna responded before they looked over at Adalind, who shrugged, "Don't ask me, everytime I ask, she shuts down." she said.

The girls were sitting in the cafeteria, minus Hanna and Aria. "You know, Aria might be right about this, Toby does have every reason to give us a hard time." Emily admitted to Adalind and Spencer. "I suppose," Spencer sighs. "But that's just not the feeling I got from talking to him." Spencer continued. "Do you know what I mean?" Spencer asked and the two girls nodded. "Yeah I do," Emily answered as Aria and Hanna joined them. "Hey," she greeted them. "Hey." Spencer said in greeting. "What is with you and the Artful Dodger?" Spencer asked Hanna. "Who?" Hanna asked, confused. "She means caleb." Adalind explained to him from her spot between Spencer and Aria.
