chapter sixteen
je suis une amie
⎯⎯⎯⎯Adalind and Aria joined Hanna in line. "Hey." "Hi, Han," The cousin's greeted Hanna. "Hey!" she smiled at them. "Cute boots, new?" she asked Aria. "Oh, ish." Aria answered. "What's with the line?" Hanna asked Hanna. "All the vending machines are on lockdown, someone's been breaking into them after hours and stealing food." Hanna explained to them. "And I heard this one kid say the alarm went off at like 3:00 a.m." she told them. "What, the vending machines have alarms?" Aria asked.
"It's the school. Someone's been sneaking out of the building in the middle of the night, which makes zero sense." Hanna answered. "Who'd wanna be here any longer than they had to?" Adalind asked with a groan. "Mm, well, I might, going home just got scary." Aria said before she pulled out a ticket for the same event that Aria and Mr. Fitz– Ezra had gone to. "This was in my dad's coat, he said it's my mom's but I'm starting to wonder if he was at the museum too." she told Hanna, since she had told Adalind already.
"Your dad? No." Hanna responded with a small laugh. "Then why was he so twitchy when I asked?" Aria asked before she sighed. "I mean, if they were both there the same night as me and Ezra–" she started. "Aria, you're just on a loop. It was a coincidence." Hanna stopped her. "Is it?" Aria asked as Adalind eyed Hanna, she seemed almost... nervous. "But, Han, come on, you don't think it's weird that my mom had a ticket the same night?" she asked. "Yes, a weird coincidence." Hanna responded, causing Aria to sigh. "Um, can you get my coffee? I'll be right back." Hanna asked before walking away. "What is up with her?" Adalind asked. "No idea." Aria answered.

The girls were in the library later that day. Adalind was next to Spencer as they watched as Hanna flipped through a magazine. "Are you reading that fast or fanning yourself?" Spencer asked Hanna, causing her to look at her. "What?" She asked, confused. "Uhm, sorry." she said before looking back at her magazine, before she suddenly stood up, catching the attention of her friends. "Where are you going?" Adalind asked. "Uhm, I left my lip gloss in the history stack. Gotta find it." she said, before rushing away leaving the girls confused as Spencer, Adalind and Emily shared a confused look.

"What is the point of a swim-off? Why would the coach pit you against each other before a meet?" Spencer asked. "She's using our combined times to choose anchor and right now, we're tied." Emily answered. "Well, you'll change that." Adalind remarked. "Maybe not, she wants it more." Emily told them. "Emily... you want it more," Spencer said as they stopped walking. "And it is okay to admit that." she added and Emily chuckled, making the other two smile before Spencer noticed something on the wall.
Emily and Adalind looked to see it was a poster asking if someone wanted to help a homeschool student in french. "You know who that's for, don't you?" Emily asked. "Toby?" Spencer guessed as the three of them walked closer. Emily nodded before Spencer ripped off a piece of the poster with a number on it. "What are you doing?" Adalind and Emily asked. "I might be interested." Spencer responded.
