Laura looked at Fedrick and asked for an unspoken request through her eyes. He understood and walked out of the room.
'Before the war, you were only few months old and yet I had to take part in the war. I had a mortal friend of mine who would be just right for the duty of keeping you inconspicuous and safe- Rose, Rosalie for you. She easily could pass for a young mother since she was already working and had quit college. She wasn't the talk of the town nor was she an outsider. Not to mention she knew how to use daggers like true Warriors though she was a powerless yet talented mortal. She was the perfect alibi we could provide you for a mother. She was very young at that time and was scared at first when I asked her of the favor. But then she understood; and took you in as her daughter.'
'Is that why mom- Rosalie won't date anyone? Because they'd be asking questions about me?' Laila enquired, remembering all the times Rosalie had denied someone who'd tried to ask her out when they'd gone shopping together.
Lita laughed lightly, 'We- I certainly didn't ask her to do that. Always the heroic sacrificial type, her. We had to put some enchantments on your neighbors to make it look like your father had died in a gas outburst at the station where he worked. And not just you but a handful of kids were kept safe the same way. Some of whom we're going to recruit once we get to the headquarters.'
'How did you meet her, back then?'
'Just like in novels- late evening, lone girl, dark alley, guys who seemed to be following her, and the savior swooping in to save her, and eventually becoming best friends with her.' Lita explained with a nostalgic look in her eyes as she looked down at Laila. Laila realized Lita must be seeing a younger version of herself in her; though as to why escaped her.
'You saved mom- I mean, Rosalie?' Laila cried.
'Oh, no. I think you got it quite wrong. Rosalie saved me that day. I was the damsel in distress and she, the knight in shining armor. That was before I knew of my powers, though.' Lita added, as a slight pink dusted her cheeks.
Realizing why she saw herself in her, Laila changed the topic and asked the question she'd been wanting to ask- 'And what was that glowing red juice in the room where I was sleeping?'
Lita gave a small chuckle. 'I forgot the number of things you don't know. That's what we drink to get our powers juices flowing again. For reviving our powers. Or just to give us strength. It's called Nalecto.'
Laila mouthed it once to make sure she got the pronunciation right and nodded slowly. 'Anybody else hungry here?' Fedrick called from outside.
Laila gave a small jolt; she'd forgotten that he was there. Lita nodded, 'Yeah, we're done! Open the sausages, will you?' She called back as she walked to the door; and pausing a little, said in a lower octave. 'Laila, go and rest awhile, you're still weak.' And she walked out of the room.
Laila nodded and settled down in one of the chairs and almost instantly drifted to sleep. In her dream she saw the war, then how she had been given to young Rosalie, then Liam's last moments- imagining a bulky man with a big weapon in his hand, muscles and all- but the face was glowing so much that it was impossible to make out how he looked and so it gave an impression of an oval torch for a face. And then the image of Lita and Liam sitting together with baby Laila in Liam's arms. A hooded figure came in and stabbed Liam in the back. There was blood everywhere. Lita screamed and baby Laila started to cry. Then a sea full of blood tried to engulf Lita and Laila. And then she woke up.
