"Jay!"

...

"Jay Jay!"

I groaned, scrunching my face as I started to slowly regain consciousness. Could it be the grim reaper making his rounds? I hoped it was the boogeyman finally coming to get me like uncle Ricky said he would when I was 8.

"Jada!"

"Hm?" I groaned again, my voice sporting its morning rasp.

"Jada Simone, you hear me calling you!.."

Nope, it was neither. It was someone much worse. Nicole McCall, and judging by the sound of her voice, she definitely wasn't happy.

"Yah mom?" I shouted.

"Come here. Now."

I opened my eyes fully, regardless if they adjusted to the sunlight beaming through my blinds. The pillow I was cradling to my chest was tossed to the side as I sat up and immediately started easing into my slippers on the side of my bed.

I shuffled through my room, fixing the fit of my tank top so I didn't walk out with one of my tits hanging out the arm hole. Since I just woke up, I couldn't think of a reason why she was mad first thing in the morning. I even went through a mental checklist.

-I marinated the chicken..

-I took out the bathroom trash..

-I vacuumed the living room..

I gasp, stopping in my tracks at the corner right before the kitchen with eyes brighter than my future.

I forgot to wash the dinner dishes..

Taking two steps back, I silently clapped my hands together firmly in a panicked prayer. With tightly sealed eyes, every breathy whisper was a false promise that I'd be better than before just like any other sinner.

"Jada Simone." My mom's calm, peeved voice sent a nervous chill through my body.

"Yes?" I said, taking small timid steps around the corner.

Unveiling myself from the shadows of the dark hallway, there stood my mom in her signature leopard print bonnet with one hand on her hip and the other laid flat on the counter, right next to the assortment of dirty pots and pans that stared me in the face. The longer she kept her ominous glare on me, it seemed to summon a dark aura clouding the room in 'Jada was gonna get it' energy.

"I asked you..to do one thing." She spoke in the same calm tone.

Swallowing the lump in my throat, I glanced at the sink then back at her. "Mom..I.."

She turned to the side to allow me a better look at the dishes. "Look."

I followed her orders and looked as if I wasn't already having a heated stare down with them. From where I stood nothing changed but when I took a few steps closer... there they were. Black fucking ants crawling over the counter and cabinets, trailing into the sink.

my jaw dropped when I saw the cursed critters and I immediately started rambling. "Mom I'm sorry, I forgot. I was on the phone with Amaya and fell asleep. I meant to clean them; I promise I did—"

"Oh, enough, Jada." She cut me off, throwing her hands as she threw the towel in. My eyes started to well up when I saw her face, but I fought through letting anything spill. Even with her eyes closed I could see the tiredness in them, tearing a piece of my heart.
