I WISH I WAS ENOUGH - CHAPTER 5

The drive to Wellington High School was focused on my father checking to make sure he had majority of any needed documents either on his phone or in the backseat of his Jeep. He went on and on about how my mom picked this school out as it had a great art program, engaging extracurricular activities and was an even spectrum of diversity. My dad asked if I was excited for the shift that was currently going on but I couldn't give him the best answer as of just yet. I was still adjusting and trying to figure out if I was enjoying the difference, if I was uncomfortable or if any of this was really happening at all.

While in the truck, Aaliyah and I sent text messages back and forth. She shared how much she missed me and that school didn't seem the same without me. She also mentioned that since I left and my mother was no longer available to give her rides home, she'd either have to ask another friend of hers to drop her off or she would have to wait forty-five minutes for her mother to get off work to get her. And by that time, most of the kids were off campus and only the after-school teenagers or athletes were there.

I felt awful, unaware of how much she depended on my mother for rides home during the time. We'd been so used to taking her home each year that no one ever thought about what it would look like if we were out of the picture. Granted, there were days where I missed school and either Aaliyah stayed home and we video chatted all day but if she did attend school while I missed a day, she always hitched a ride with someone else. I told her that today I was taking a tour of the school and getting my paperwork situated for the remainder of the semester. Aaliyah wanted me to take pictures of the school to compare if it was a downgrade or an upgrade from my last school.

While I was thoroughly prepared to share the comparisons of Wellington High School to my last school with her, I wanted to give it a fair shot and see how things played out for a little while.

As we pulled into the parking lot of the high school, I was astonished with it's large campus. My old campus wasn't this spacious and was stacked with many floors instead of spread out. The campus looked pretty intake and teenagers walked along the sidewalk, road skateboards into the gate, or were on bicycles or motorcycles. Other late students were pulling their cars into a separate parking lot that was marked by a sign that read 'Student Parking Only'. It felt a bit comforting to see the diversity of the students walking into campus.

After parking, we stepped out of the Jeep, my dad and I walked side by side to what we presumed was the office. The both of us was just as unsure as the other yet we continued walking, hoping that we were going in the right direction and my father released a sigh of relief once we got closer and could indeed see through the windows of the front doors that we were in the right place. We walked inside and stepped into the line that was set up of late students.

My dad and I waited in line, waiting for all the parents to excuse their teens to be late or pick them up early for the ones that were sick. After all the students were sent to class, it was finally our turn to speak to the woman at the desk.

"Good morning. How may I help you both this morning?" The cheerful young receptionist at the desk greeted us with a warm welcome and a bright smile. Her brown dyed natural hair sat in soft short curls, and her make-up was minimal.

My dad put his hand on my shoulder and smiled softly at the lady.
