I started working on The Fox, Red in 2016. It became an on and off again project during that time as I wondered what I wanted to do with it. Was I going to use it as the base for a web design project or did I want to work on a compelling story that tested my ability to write?

I wanted to try a first-person perspective and dabble in a little bit of raunchy writing to break out of the comfort zone I had written myself into. After 7 years, I can say that I went back to the idea of a solid foundation for the story and started to leave the smut by the wayside.

Red's character went through many rewrites as the story went on. I went back and changed already published sections as I saw opportunities to enhance the story. As I got closer to the end, and as I worked to wrap everything up as best I could, I realized that the size of this project was larger than I had initially expected.

I didn't expect this to go over 100 sections but I'm glad it did. A typical novel is no more than 400 pages and no more than 100,000 words. I struggle to tell a story under that. While I don't know how many pages this is exactly, it is nearly 250,000 words. In a standard rough draft format, that's about 1100 pages.

And you read it! You went through the whole thing to reach this point right here and I have to ask; how are you feeling?

I wrote this story to challenge some of the norms when it comes to writing. I thought about giving this a happy ending but that was one of the many rewrites.

And while Red's journey ends here, he is not done. His influence will continue across the upcoming stories even if he's not the main focus. I hope that you enjoyed this adventure through a small section of Red's life. And I hope you enjoy the journey through the next one!
