The cake tasting
Wei Ying was the last one to reach the prestigious bakery that would serve the wedding cake and desserts for the wedding. In all these years, only three of his clients were able to afford their wedding cakes here, one client being his own sister, such was the reputation of this particular bakery.
Lan Wangji was the first one Wei Ying saw, who in his white suit, was staring at a painting. The walls of the bakery proudly displayed many paintings, a lady kneading a dough being one of them that had currently enraptured Lan Wangji's attention.
"Dr. Lan," Wei Ying called. The man, whose back was facing Wei Ying, flinched imperceptibly.
Wei Ying conjured up a smile as Lan Wangji slowly turned to face him. "How are you, Dr. Lan?"
Lan Wangji nodded, but didn't proceed to add anything to the conversation. "I'm sorry. I had no intention of keeping my clients waiting. It's just that, my taxi driver was new and stupid, and we ended up getting lost,"
"It's all right. It happens. We can start the tasting now," Lan Wangji said.
Wei Ying saw Mianmian and Wen Qing around the corner; Mianmian was laughing at something Wen Qing was showing on her phone. Mianmian was wearing a stunning yellow sundress, looking every bit ethereal.
Twenty-five different flavors of cake samples were brought to them. Their flavors ranged from classics such as chocolate and vanilla to extremely exotic flavors such as coconut-papaya cake with spicy chai frosting. They even had herb flavors ones with rosemary and thyme. Wei Ying had a sweet tooth, so he liked most of them, never knowing which one would be the best choice.
Lan Wangji chose the one with loquat flavour, Wen Qing chose white chocolate-strawberry cake, while both Wei Ying and Mianmian remained undecided. Wei Ying finally chose orange-lotus root cake, but Mianmian still remained undecided.
"My ideal wedding cake would be a spicy one, encrusted with inordinate amounts of chillies, but this lotus root cake is not bad either," Wei Ying chirped theatrically, his hands gesticulating everywhere, earning blank looks from others, and an amused look from Lan Wangji.
"We will scratch all of it and start fresh if you don't like any of these," the pastry chef told Mianmian, seeing how unimpressed she looked.
"There's no need for that. This is good. I'm just really overwhelmed. That's all," Mianmian replied back.
"Okay. You can take your time and decide. Just a suggestion, if you prefer a simple, one flavour cake, instead of a complicated one, our red velvet cake has been unprecedentedly very famous this season, so far," The baker said, and left them alone to decide.
"I liked both Lan Wangji's and Wen Qing's choices. I don't know which one to decide on," Mianmian said.
"My vote goes to loquat flavor cake. It's unique. Something unique for a unique pair," Wei Ying said with a smile, and Lan Wangji darted an impenetrable look at Wei Ying.
"Should we go with the Loquat one then? There are so many loquat trees around the cloud recesses. Eating them with my mother had been one of my most treasured memories of her," Lan Wangji said with an air of melancholy, startling everyone. This was the most he had spoken since this morning, and the added tidbits of his childhood had left even his fiancé stunned.
"I guess, it's a loquat cake then," Mianmian said, holding Lan Wangji's hands, a smile tugging at her lips.
"No," Wen Qing suddenly erupted, startling everyone.
"What I mean is, Mianmian, this is your wedding too. As a bride, you get to cast a deciding vote. Do you really want a loquat flavour cake for your own wedding? Don't get influence by anything. With all due respect, you shouldn't compromise. Choose what your heart wants. What do you really like, Mianmian?" Wen Qing asked, looking quite intimidating. She looked like she was ready to fight every single person who would deny Mianmian.
