When I was a child, smiling, nosy adults would often ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up. The question would set a whole carousel of possibilities spinning in my mind. Scenes, conversations, and all manner of uniforms and work clothes flickered through my imagination: one day, my job was to teach children; the next one, I was exploring space and sailing among the stars.

I changed my mind constantly, but not because I was indecisive. I was searching for something that would align with what, somewhere deep inside me, was beginning to feel like a calling.

Then, at the age of ten, came the revelation.

I was going to be famous.

Yes. That was my destiny.

Plumbing the depths of my passions and desires, I realized that becoming a successful writer would turn my life into one long, blissful soak in the warm glow of the spotlight.

And so I began working relentlessly toward it.

At last, I made it.

But things turned out very differently from what I had imagined.

Not even in my darkest, most sickening nightmare could I have conceived of what actually happened to me—and what I intend to tell through this novel.

I've always been told that money is the true driving force behind the world. It's believed to be a symbol of glory, the means and ends of everything, and it's solely because of money that people are willing to do things they never thought possible.

I have never agreed with that.

To me, money was just the period at the end of a sentence, the attestation of a diligent job.

I had to reconsider.

In the realm of entertainment, we all end up selling our soul. We all become slaves and victims of money.

Writing these words means rubbing salt into wounds that are still raw. But if doing so can tear even the smallest hole in the glossy, glittering curtain drawn over the horrors and terrifying dynamics of the industry, then the pain is worth it.

There is one thing that money cannot buy. Salvation.
