"I have nothing to wear and he's going to be here any minute," I declared as I flopped down on my bed in my bra and underwear. Alexis, my roommate, stuck her head out of my closet and giggled at me.
"You could always go like that."
"This is a first date! I need clothes!"
I jumped back to my feet and hurried to the closet. "Just give me something to wear. It will have to do."
She pulled out a summery light blue sundress and white cardigan. I pulled on the dress over my head and turned to my dresser. I had only five minutes to fix my long brown hair. What was I going to do?
"Sit," Alexis instructed. I sat on the edge of my bed, turning so my back was to her. She ran a brush through my hair then pulled it up, twisted it, and put a few bobby pins in.
"It should stay even if he kisses you good night," she teased. I rolled my eyes. Like that was going to happen. We weren't really dating. I jumped to my feet and turned back to my dresser as a knock sounded on my door. Alexis and I shared a look. He was early—and I wasn't ready!
"Just a minute!" she called to him, her eyebrows raised at me.
"He's early. Impressive," she murmured as I swiped on mascara and lip gloss. I didn't bother examining myself in the mirror. It would have to do.
She walked to the door and opened it. Changkyun stood there wearing a pair of jeans and a light blue button-down shirt open over a white t-shirt, his hands stuffed in his pockets. His eyes widened a little when he spotted me. I blushed as I smiled, feeling satisfied with my appearance from his reaction. Maybe less was more.
"Hi," I said, feeling shy as I turned away from the mirror over my dresser. I pushed stray strands of hair behind my ear.
"Hi," he replied and cleared his throat. "You look beautiful."
"Thank you. So do you," I agreed. "I mean, handsome. You look handsome."
Ohmygod, why was I so nervous? This was Changkyun. I was being ridiculous. It had to be because I hadn't been on a date in so long.
His lips quirked in a smile. My knees trembled. What was happening to me? I shook my head and smiled.
"Are you ready to go?" he asked.
"Oh, yeah. Let me—"
Alexis shoved my clutch purse into my hands and pushed me towards him. "Get out of here. Have a good time. I won't wait up."
Changkyun's arm slid around my waist as I stumbled into him and he spun us both out of the room. Alexis closed the door behind us. We shared a look and burst out laughing.
"I think she's more excited for this date than we are," he commented. His arm stayed around my waist as we started down the hall.
"I'm a little nervous," I admitted when we calmed down. His eyebrows shot up as he looked at me.
"Why?"
I shrugged. "I don't know. I didn't think I would be. It's not like it's a romantic date or anything." I shook my head. "I really don't know."
"Can I tell you a secret?"
I nodded.
"I'm a little nervous too."
We grinned at each other. I leaned into his side as we walked down the stairs. Once outside the building, he steered us toward the nearest student parking.
"So, where are we going?"
"What's your favorite place to eat?"
My eyes widened and joy made me jump up and down. "Really?"
He grinned. "Yes, really. I couldn't take you just anywhere if I'm trying to impress you. It had to look like I put a little thought into it."
"I'm surprised you know what my favorite place to eat is. But I'm so happy you do. Thank you."
Impulsively, I kissed his cheek. His turned pink as he looked away, the grin still on his face.
"Though I don't think it's me you're trying to impress. Oh my gosh, we have so much to talk about."
"We can talk in the car."
We didn't talk much more as we hurried to his car. I giggled, thinking we looked like the young lovers we were portraying, hurrying off to a clandestine meeting. I was full-on laughing by the time we reached his car. I leaned heavily against him as he unlocked and opened the passenger door for me.
"What is so funny?" he asked as I slipped into my seat.
"Us. It's just funny. Get in and I'll explain."
He shut my door and I buckled my seatbelt as he hurried around the car and slid in behind the wheel.
"Now please tell me so I can laugh with you," he said once his door was shut.
"It's us. We're not really dating but we're both acting like this is a real date. I just find it amusing."
"Well, it kind of has to be like a real date. I know you're going to talk to Minhyuk about it."
"If he'll talk to me. He was weird when I left to get ready earlier. I don't know what that was about."
I frowned, settling into my seat as Changkyun buckled in and started the car.
"He'll talk to you. You're his best friend. We just sprang this on everyone. He needs time to get used to it."
"But why? Why does he need the time if he's not interested in me like that? I really think we're just doing this for you and Jooheon. Minhyuk will never want me like that."
"You don't know that."
"I think I do." I shook my head. "It doesn't matter. We'll do this for you. You and Jooheon. I think he really likes you. He looked hurt when we announced our relationship. I felt bad."
Changkyun nodded, biting his thumbnail. "I know. I'll talk to him."
"Will he talk to you?"
He glanced at me. "I don't know."
"Should I talk to him?"
"How awkward do you want that conversation to be?"
"Good point. I just want to help."
"You are. Going out with me tonight is helping both of us."
"Okay. I'm going to trust you. I just hope it doesn't all backfire on us."
"The worst that will happen is Minhyuk gets what he's always wanted. That wouldn't be so bad."
"But you won't get what you want."
"There are other people out there."
"But not another Jooheon."
He smiled wistfully. "No, not another Jooheon. He's someone special."
I smiled but didn't comment, thinking of my own someone special. Would Minhyuk be weird around me from now on?
