Chapter 15
Ms. Belle had walked in Mary's bedroom to put a dash of makeup on her, but she was speechless at the little number hugging Mary's curves. She helped the young woman in silence, and held her breath after the final touches. Ms. Belle was proud of the light smokey eye, which only made Mary's greys pop. Mary hardly ever put color on her face, and she was scared until she witnessed herself in the mirror.
Nathan could, yet couldn't, believe how amazing Mary looked in that short dress and her hair up into a neatly swirled bun. He was dying on the inside, possibly thinking that it was a mistake for him to get something so damn alluring. With each step she took down, he continued planning on what positions he wanted to put her in.
The delighted woman watched the young couple depart with happiness. Whatever was happening between the two of them was what Belle had been secretly hoping for. Nathan was much happier than she's seen him in years. Ever since he went to live away from his family, he's been even more of a recluse. He was very quiet as a child into adulthood, but only ever became animated when he was around his older brother, sister, and Chaz.
He had built the house in a way that he always dreamed. It had its beauty, but it was still missing something. The dream house was empty on the inside, and not just because of the clean white walls. Nathaniel was close to his family, yet the nakedness of his space was far from the welcoming walls in the patriarch Vanderbilt estate that was in the neighboring city. Why Nathan wanted to be so far was still an answer she had yet to receive from him. However, after four years, she figured she just might know why.
The car ride was quiet in the beginning, but once they entered the city, Nathan broke the silence. He hurried over to her side and began to point out the buildings that he mentioned on their first dinner date. Mary happily looked out of the window, just listening to him speak with great delight and enthusiasm.
"When would reconstruction begin?" she asked, turning to her right to face him.
He leaned in close, almost putting his head on her shoulder and muttered, "Maybe in a year or two? I've contributed a lot financially along with other business partners. We're hoping to get a few parks in here and there."
Nathan was becoming even more sweet to Mary. He wanted to make the metropolis more beautiful for its inhabitants, and her side of the city was no exception to him. Slowly, her hands eased over his. Looking down at their touch, she smiled as she witnessed him lacing his fingers with hers.
Yet, it only took seconds for Mary to let her smile fade. She gently pulled her hand away looking out of the window again.
"C'mon, Mary. You have to explain what that means," he sighed.
She turned back and sadly spelled the name with her fingers. He took in a deep breath and pushed it out. She was right. What about Karen? She was still in the picture, and he hadn't completely finalized how he was going to get her out of his life. He was too busy worrying about his time with Mary, making sure that she understood what he was starting to feel for her.
He's been in a daze and lost in a world that was just filled with her smiles and laughter. Nathan didn't think that a woman would be able to make him feel so helpless without any effort, and every night he scolds himself for ever mocking her in the beginning. She was so much more than him. She had what he wanted which was a different perspective of life. The monotony was gone once he had to track her down and bring her back to Belle. Nathan was a man by the books, and his schedules were always prime. However, ever since that day she didn't want to come outside to the limo, he's been enjoying the break in the habits.
