Chapter 26
Belle had spent all evening apologizing on Nathan's behalf to all of his guests, fibbing that there was an emergency that he had to take care of back at the tower. Once all of the guests had departed, Belle quickly shut the doors and took in a deep breath while staring blankly at the panels.
"Where is my son?!" Bernadette raged to the quiet little woman.
"He's somewhere else... having a moment to himself," Belle confirmed, while casually turning around.
"How dare you try to control Nathaniel and take him from me," his mother seethed. "That's all you have ever tried to do, since–"
"If you dare stoop so low as to bring my daughter out of your mouth–" Belle began, but didn't finish because she had never wanted to utter anything so malice.
Just as she wished, Bernadette held her tongue, and Belle hurried off into the kitchen.
"Did they make it?" Joseph eagerly asked after rushing into the kitchen.
"Yes," Belle softly smiled.
Joseph put one on his face as well, but immediately let it drop once they heard Laura's storming footsteps.
"Where is my brother?" she snapped to Belle with anger.
"You don't talk to her like that," Joseph immediately reprimanded after zipping his way in front of his blunt sister.
Laura let a fervid stare meet his. However, the look of her older brother was still as intimidating as it had always been, so she quickly reclined and turned away from his cold stare.
Belle made her way beside Joseph and reaffirmed, "That's right, child. You don't talk to me like that. Now, what are you doing in my kitchen?"
"I cannot believe you are defending this, Joe," Laura whispered, ignoring Belle's question.
Joseph scoffed with laughter, "I can't believe that you would think that I would give a damn about bringing that red-haired floozy back into his life."
"She's pregnant with our brother's child!" she screeched even louder.
"Child support or hopefully custody?" he shrugged as though it were nothing.
Laura was getting even more emotional as the topic persisted, "How can men be so casual about something like this?"
Belle asked suddenly concerned with the young woman's rosy cheeks, "What is matter, Laura?"
Laura threw her face into her hands and began to cry. Joseph was unsure of what was happening, but instinct told him to hug her. She shook her head in her hands, hating that she couldn't control her feelings about it any longer. Finally, Laura showed her face to her brother and then to Belle.
Laura exhaled with disbelief, "I can't have children."
Belle's soft touch quickly lifted up her face. A brief lull between the three of them was accompanied by faint, uncontrollable whimpering.
"Mom knows?" Joseph asked with reddening eyes.
Laura shook her head, "No. I don't know how to tell her this. She'll never be able to look at me. That's what has happened already with Paul."
"Then you rid of him," Belle firmly stated with a tear falling from her cheek.
"It's not that easy," Laura countered.
