Chapter 11
Mary walked up the stairs and didn't look back to retreat to her quarters. She didn't want to think about what he meant. He was lying again. She was just his maid. That was the only reason she was where she was now.
Mary wondered how many times she would find herself trapped in a moving vehicle with the man she wanted to throttle, but kiss at the same time. The craving for him never subsided the way she had wanted it to. Still, after the night before, the way he terrified her, she just knew it wasn't him. It was hard to deny that what he did was something that she wouldn't stand for.
Her talk with Nellie was something that she needed to have for a while now. Her sister's words were kind, as Mary expected to receive a scolding about her true feelings about her boss. However, while she was confessing all the mess to her sister, all Nellie could do was smile. Nellie knew what it was like to feel the way her little sister did, and even though it was stressful to Mary, it made her a little happy.
Her sister comforted her and, once again, asked her if she was comfortable there and felt okay. To Mary's surprise, she didn't say no. She wasn't sure what was happening at the Vanderbilt estate, but it was definitely more than what she had signed up for.
Nellie had never seen Mary this passionate about someone before. Her signing was fervent, as she kept emphasizing how wrong Mr. Vanderbilt was. Nellie had sat in silence as Mary gave a heartfelt profession of not knowing what to do. Gene was trying to invade her mind, but at the same time, she couldn't understand why she hadn't told him to stop. Her boss, on the other hand, was leaving her in such disarray that whenever he came up, there was always a slight find the words.
The adoration Mary had for Gene was a first time experience of tenderness from a man; but, of course, that was thwarted when she found out that most of their time together was a lie. His texts and voicemails were becoming a habit, and Mary was now good at deleting them all once they came. She was tired of the monotony of feeling like a basic character that simply melded into whatever the world wanted to make of her.
Within a few minutes, Mary heard a soft knock at the door, and she hurried to open it. She pulled Ms. Belle into an embrace and cried into her shoulder.
Shocked, Ms. Belle patted her back and quickly asked, "What is the matter, dear?"
Mary pulled away and wiped her face. She was so frustrated, and she was tired.
"Nathaniel must have said something stupid," Ms. Belle grunted before twisting her lips, and Mary looked off angrily hoping Ms. Belle would see her agreement.
"Mary," Ms. Belle began, as she closed the door behind her. "Nathaniel, is... he can be a complete fool."
Mary scoffed before a laugh and roughly undid her braid.
"He says many things that he doesn't mean too often, and now it appears he's dealing with the consequences of not thinking twice before acting," the little woman admitted while running her fingers to help untangle her hair.
Quickly, Mary's shoulders and hands lifted to the small woman in question. "Why now?"
Ms. Belle took a step back and smirked. Light blue eyes were admiring the sweet face and over Mary's frame. Immediately, Mary tilted her head and shook her hands, already rejecting the notion from Ms. Belle.
"It's true. Ever since–" Ms. Belle began, but Mary cut her off, grasping her hands, and pleading for her not to go on.
"I'm just a maid." She mouthed with unhappiness.
