The Morning After

I lazily threw my hand across my bed and onto my bed-side table to check my phone. 3 texts and 1 missed call. Who from? Yup - Chris. I sighed and put my phone back down. What did he want? Last night was such a mess. My stomach turned as I thought about it and I grew nervous. Chris was so mysterious but I knew that he wasn't really interested in me. The way he forced himself upon my person made me realise that he didn't want me - just my body. I shortly forgot about the night before as my mother came bounding into my room loudly.

"Ella! Are you up?" she squealed.

"I am now, ma." I laughed, watching her with one eye open and my face still half covered by the duvet. My mum was such a bubbly character. She always found the positive things in bad situations and always had a smile on her face. I couldn't tell her about Chris, though. I'm not like her. My mother was the pretty, popular one at school and she thought I was the same. She was constantly buying me pretty dresses, pretty shoes, pretty make-up. Pretty, pretty, pretty. That wasn't me - it still isn't me. She didn't understand that though. If I were to tell her about the previous night's shananigans she would get overly excited and that couldn't happen. Ever.

"Ella, we're going to go shopping today. Just us two. Bonding time!" she clapped her hands excitedly and then ran out of my room smiling. Bonding time? Just us two? There never has been anyone else. We always went shopping together and she always bought dresses. And make-up, and shoes.

I threw my legs over the edge of my bed and forced my arms up into the air, completely pushing Chris to the back of my mind. I then proceeded to get ready. Band tee, skinny jeans, eyeliner, converse, done. I gave my hair a quick backcomb and adjusted it in the mirror. Satisfied, I nodded at my reflection and then jumped back onto my bed, and checked my phone.

Message 3:

i have a surprise for you...hope you like it! -chris x

My first thought was that he typed cute. Seeing his name and how eager he was to talk to me really put me on edge. I felt my cheeks turning up into a smile and I giggled at myself. This was so dumb. I text back:

Surprise? Pour moi? Exciting. x

I slid my phone into my pocket and ran down the stairs with a big, cheesy grin on my face. Grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge, I bounded out of the door and into the car where my mum was waiting.

"Oh, Ella. Why do you have to dress so boy-like? Wear one of the dresses I bought you!" she squealed, over enthusiastically. I ignored the comment and stuck my headphones in as we made our way down the road and towards town.
