"Look at this gorgeous dress, Ella! You'll look divine in this! Oh please try it on! Please please please!" My mother bounced up and down, squawking and flailing her arms everywhere with a lilac summer dress in her grasp. It was gorgeous, but not for me.

"Ella pleaaaaase!" She continued begging and pleading. That's one thing about my mother - she's too persistent. Her behaviour caricatured that of a 5 year old. I snatched the dress from her hands and headed towards the fitting rooms before she began stamping her feet and throwing a tantrum.

Stupid dress. Stupid mum. Stupid shopping. Stupid. I threw myself moodily into the last cubicle and proceeded to putting the dress on. It looked, as I knew it would, dumb. I looked atrocious and my shoulders looked like those of a rugby player. I didn't want to leave the cubicle but I could hear my mother talking to the shop assistant.

"Oooh my girl's going to look beautiful in this dress!" she cried. Before she made anymore embarrassing comments, I stormed out of my cubicle and into the shop where she stood.

"Oh my darling!" She attacked me with compliments and cooed over how feminine I looked. I knew I looked awful, and no matter what she said, I would forever believe that I looked awful. Looking around the shop to avoid eye contact with my mother, I caught a glimpse of familiar locks of medium-length, soft, ginger hair. My heart sank.

"Mum I need to get out of this shop. Now. We can come back for this dress later." I spat sternly through my teeth.

"Ella, don't be so rude to me, please. Especially in public." My mum raised her voice a huge amount. As soon as she said my name the boy with the luscious hair turned around. I knew it was him. Chris quickly made his way towards me with a huge grin on his face.

"Damn, Ella. You look good." Chris smiled his charming half smile, winking at me and biting his lip. My mother just stared at him, then at me, then at Chris, and then back at me. Everyone seemed to be smiling - just not me. I felt my face burning up as I stood there in the lilac summer dress, speechless.

"I'll text you yeah, darlin'? See ya." He chuckled. Chris could tell I felt uncomfortable and made a quick exit from the shop.

"Go get changed, El." My mother was smiling so cheesily at me. I wanted the ground to swallow me whole.

When I emerged from the changing rooms, my mother said nothing. We paid for the dress and left the shop.

"How about a bite to eat my angel? Then we can talk about that hottie." My mum winked at me. I honestly believe that was the cringiest thing she has ever said to me. Ever. We made our way through town passing various dress shops on the way. We stopped at none of them - I didn't understand why. Knowing a boy was interested in me seemed to cheer my mum up insanely. I still felt uncomfortable. We sat down at a small table in the food court.

"Veggie burger and chips, yeah darling?" I nodded at my mum as she got up to get our food and then checked my phone. 1 new message.

Christofer:

love that dress on u...the color is so purty! did u buy it? xp -chris x

I slammed my head down onto the table and screamed internally before sighing and typing back:

Thank you, Chris. My mum chose it. Yeah I bought it, sadly. x

As I pressed send my mum returned and was raising her eyebrows, smiling. She knew it was him. Nothing was said about Chris or about dresses although I could see my mum dying to discuss him. I dug into my veggie burger and my mum nibbled at her BigMac. I sighed.

"I don't know how you can eat meat, ma." She shrugged off the comment and continued nibbling as I shoved the remains of my meal into my mouth. As I leaned back in my chair my phone buzzed again. I looked up at my mum and she was beaming.

"Don't mind me.." she laughed.

Christofer:

ur welcome babydoll...sadly? you can wear it when we go out on a date xp o yeah.....about that surprise..u'll find out tonight! -chris x

Date? Seriously? I wasn't sure whether I liked him or not. I smiled down at my phone and my mother burst.

"Oh Ella do tell me who he is! What's his name? Oh please tell me!" Her eyes were wide and she was leaning over the table, begging me mercilessly.

"Mum stop it, you're embarrassing me.." I was bright red and I wanted to throw myself off of a bridge. What was going on? I replied to Chris:

Date? Pardon? And oh yes.. I'm still curious. x

My mother watched me and as we looked at each other, we picked up all of our things and headed out of the shopping centre. Thank God it was over.
