DEAD TERRITORY

3 - Panic

"What are we gonna do?" Lory says almost in tears. This is when Mathilda has enough of the childish assholes and stands up.
"I'm gonna tell all of you exactly what we're gonna do. We're gonna go to the government building in this city and we're gonna get some fucking help there. Everyone can't be dead or walking dead already and if there's one house with safety, it's that one. If we have to tell them what we did, Khalil speaks" she says and looks Khalil dead in the eyes. He doesn't dare to say anything against her as he knows she's right. They start taking down the barricade again and people prepare to go out. Logan walks up to the bathroom door and knocks carefully.

"Seven? Are you okay?" she asks through the door.
"Take a guess" Seven answers crying. Logan sees Charlie and Kevin looking over toward her when they hear Seven's breaking voice through the door.
"You have to come out of there now. We're gonna go to safety and this will all be over" Logan says.
"That's easy for you to say!" Seven still cries.
"Venna, open the door" Logan says and after a few seconds the door unlocks. Logan opens the door and finds Seven on the floor, wiping away the last of her tears.
"Stand up" she says and reaches out her hand to Seven. Seven takes her hand and gets up.
"Are we ready to go?" Charlie asks when Seven walks out. She nods at him.

As they're walking away from the school they don't get far before they stand face to face with another infected down the street.
"It's just one" Charlie says and points the gun at it.
"Wait!" Khalil puts his hand on Charlie's gun.
"Dad?" he asks as he slowly approaches it. Charlie keeps his finger on the trigger and his eyes strained on Khalil's dad.
"You gotta be kidding me" Mathilda says rolling her eyes. Colton looks over at Jonah and see his eyes turning darker and his fists balls up again. He looks at Seven and finds another gun tucked at the back of her pants. Khalil's dad does the bird-like scream before he runs at them and Charlie puts the gun up and shoots with no hesitation. Unfortunately he didn't shoot it before it got Khalil. Jonah looks down at his stomach and slowly a spot of blood starts to form on his stomach. He makes a quivering sound and all the others turn to him to see the blood. They look back and see Colton with a gun still pointed toward Jonah.
"Colton, why did you do that?" Eli asks confused and scared. Jonah falls to the ground and Kevin checks his pulse. He looks up at Charlie and shakes his head no.
"That's not Jonah anymore" Colton says and gives the gun back to Seven.
"No, not now that he's dead" Logan says and looks at Colton.
"Look at his eyes. Look what it did to him" Colton says and Kevin looks down at Jonah's dark open eyes.
"From the moment I shot him he knew why I did it. He asked me to kill him. He knew what we were working on was dangerous and not done. It's radioactive. He was in pain." Colton's eyes start to tear up.
"He was my best friend. I barely know you guys" he says and looks down at Eli.
"You know me" Seven says and smiles at him.
"Yeah. That's true" Colton says smiling back a little.
"We need to go. If we're gonna be there before anyone else is" Logan says and looks at Colton.
"Logan is right" Charlie fills in putting the gun in his belt and they start walking again.

When they get to the govornment building the doors are already broken and open. They walk into the abandoned deserted place and look around, making their way inside through broken glass, chaos-looking furniture and chairs all over the floor.
"This is crazy. Only a few minutes and the whole city is abandoned. People really listen to the broadcast system" Charlie says as he's moving a couple of chairs out of his way.
"Let's split up" Kevin says and turns around to face the others.
"Mathilda, Colton and Logan go look for any more weapons or anything that can be used as it. Lee, Lory and Seven, there's a diner on the second floor. See if you can find any food. Me, Charlie and Eli will keep our eyes on the place" he says and looks over at Charlie who nods militant. Seven picks up the gun from her pants again.
"Colton!" she calls and throws the gun to him. We're going to the second floor, if there were any dead running here we'd know already. You're staying on this floor, you're gonna need it more than we" she says and he thanks her before they go separate ways.
