{ ahn miyoung's pov: }
i sat at a small table with ricky, notebooks and textbooks spread out on the table. he flipped through some pages in a textbook to find a timeline. the moment he found the page i slammed the textbook shut. i pressed the back of my pencil onto question number eight on the paper.
"when did the joseon dynasty officially end?" i read aloud.
"uhhhh," ricky struggled. "1879?"
"wrong."
"1903?"
"big difference from your previous answer, but still incorrect."
"well what is it then?" he gave up. "just let me look at the timeline."
"it ended in 1910 when the japan-korean treaty was signed," i sighed. "is there anything that can help you remember the date?"
he thought for a moment. "i mean my cousin's birthday is the first two numbers at the end, october nineteenth."
"perfect. use that."
"will it really be helpful?"
"yes, i've used this strategy for years. trust me it works."
i continued to help him complete his history homework. knowing that ms. han would assign us a test soon, i decided to also help him with other things in the unit.
"who was the first king of joseon?" i quizzed him.
"taejo of joseon, but he was born as yi seong-gye."
"great job" i praised him. "and when did he live?"
"i don't know," he confessed without thinking. "no point in thinking since i know that i don't know."
"fair point. i can't think of the dates off of the top of my head right now," i flipped through my school binder looking for my flash cards.
ricky peeked over my shoulder at my binder. "you have so many dividers."
i mean, i guess i do. my binder consists of my math notebook in the front, a folder for loose homework, dividers for each subject, which held papers and packets for those classes, and then just scratch paper.
i shrugged. "just one for every class."
"i like your personality," ricky declared out of the blue.
