The lab was quiet, the hour late. Everyone had gone home. Everyone except one young scientist.

Sixteen-year-old Purah was busy dismantling a Guardian. She had started official work at the Royal Research Lab one week ago, after hanging out there for years before. Most would call her 'insane' or 'overworked' but she stayed late because she wanted to.

Soft footsteps sounded behind her. "I thought we already discussed you staying here so late."

She sat up. "And how come that doesn't apply to you, Robbie?"

"I was making sure you were going to leave." He flashed his familiar grin. Being a year older than her, Robbie has started at the Lab before her, so everything was old news to him. But he shared the exact amount of love and excitement as Purah when it came to science. They had been best friends because of that since she was eight years old.

She smiled and rolled her eyes. "Whatever. Lets go then."

They left the lab, heading out into the night air. "You know...I don't believe I gave you what I promised for your 16th birthday last week."

She gasped and grabbed his arm. "That's right! I was so caught up in finally getting to work at the Lab..."

Robbie chuckled. "I don't understand why you want to see my eye color so badly."

"You hide it which makes me curious. And either way, you promised to let me see once I turned 16."

"You almost forgot."

"I would've remembered eventually."

"Sure."

"Stop delaying and just let me see!"

With a dramatic sigh, he turned to her and pushed his goggles up.

She never forgot that night. She would puzzle about it sometimes, whenever she was alone. But as time edged on, it just settled in the back of her mind. A fact that it existed, but was impossible to figure out.
