"Who's Harry Potter?" I ask. The girls gasp and I can feel James's surprised exhale of breath on my neck. Lily stares at me in disbelief before proceeding to explain.
"Well, he's our dad. He might also be super famous because he saved the world and there was a prophecy written about him, but you know, no big deal..." She trails off awkwardly, obviously struggling to praise her dad like this.
"No way! That's so cool! It sounds like one of my favorite books," I say enthusiastically, attempting to lighten the mood swirling around the room.
"Oh it is. It's in all of our history books," Lily agrees with me, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
James tries to change the subject, "Lil, have you seen Al yet?"
"Yeah, we saw each other at dinner. Apparently, Mum told him to tell you to behave this year."
"Wait, there's more of you?!" I ask, turning to face James. Being an only child, I don't see how someone could have more than two kids.
"Yeah, my little brother. Albus is in third year with our cousin Rose," he looks over my head at Lily.
"Write to Mum and tell her that of course I'll behave. When have I not?" Lily and I snort in unison. I only know of one incident when he wasn't doing what he was supposed to, but I bet his sister could recount many.
"What?!"
"Uh, what about the time your friend tried to kill me?" I state, raising my eyebrows at him.
"Marco wasn't trying to kill you," he defends," Him and I were just-"
I cut him off, "Exactly,"
James crosses his arms as Lily ticks off the times she remembers.
"How about when you set the trees on fire? Or when you hexed Scorpius for hanging out with Rose and Albus? Oh I know! Remember when you ate that-"
"Alright, I get it! So I'm not the most responsible wizard here," he shrugs. The other girls giggle. I smirk confidently at them, knowing I've won this fight.
"You better find Al. He's writing to Mum in the morning."
"Why can't you do it, Lily?" He asks her.
"We all know he has the best hand writing."
"Fine," James huffs and starts for the door. Before he leaves, he turns to me in mock salute.
"See you in the morning, Princess."
Shouting after him, I receive stares from the girls," I'm going to start calling you Princess if you don't stop!"
All at once the girls break out in hysterical laughter. I look at them confused, I didn't think was that funny, but you never know how eleven year old girls will react. I smile at them, joking, until I find out what's so funny.
"He's... he's so into you!" Ella chokes out between laughing, tears pouring down her face. Anna's rolling around on the floor, Lily's doubled over, and Ember chuckles along with the others. She doesn't seem as interested in all of this as the rest are.
"That's absurd! James does not like me!"
Lilly smirks at me. What's with the Potters and their smirking? I wonder if the other boy-what was his name... Albus! Yeah- I wonder if he's like his siblings. I hope not.
"Denial," Anna says in a sing-song voice.
I flush bright red. He doesn't like me, right? That would be just plain weird. I mean, his friend tried to kill me! He can't like me.
Turning around to hide my red checks I stutter," I... I'm going to bed."
This sends the girls into another round of hysterical laughter. I'm done for.
