Chapter 4

I was laying in bed when the deputy came to the cell.

"Melanie, there is someone who wants to see you." She told me.

"Who? I don't even have a lawyer anymore." I told her as I got up. Betsy looked at me worriedly.

"Mel, be careful."

"No one will do her any harm." The Deputy said. "It's just a visit."

I nodded and stretched my hand so the deputy could put me in handcuffs, and then I walked after her. As I walked along the corridor, I passed in front of Abby's cell and she whistled and said something nasty. The Deputy shouted at her.

"Is she molesting you?" The Deputy asked as we continued to walk.

"I can handle her," I murmured.

"If she does, let me know. She thinks she can do whatever she wants but she's wrong."

"Thank you."

Why was she being so nice to me suddenly? What changed?

I thought we were going into the visiting room like usual, instead, she took me somewhere else. My stomach contracted as I realised I had never been in this corridor. I kept looking behind me, thinking someone might attack me any minute, but nothing happened. Finally, we stopped in front of a door. The deputy took off my handcuffs and opened the door.

"You can go in?"

"Aren't you coming?" I asked.

"No. I'll wait here. You have 30 minutes."

This wasn't the usual procedure, and I was reluctant to go in, but I didn't have any choice. I stepped inside and a good masculine scent filled my nostrils. I inhaled delightedly. Seated at the corner was a man who looked at me with curiosity. I stopped as I gazed at him, taking in his appearance. He had the kind of face that made you stop in your tracks and magnetic grey eyes which made you feel weak as soon as you looked at them. I felt vulnerable under his scrutiny. Being closed here so long away from the opposite sex had its effect. He got up on his feet, towering over me. Wow, he was really tall and his body filled the tailor-made suit so well. I exhaled nervously and looked down, hoping that by breaking eye contact, my heart would stop rushing and return to normality.

"Hello, Melanie." He said, his voice as deep as I imagined it would be. "I'm Dr Luke Shaw." He said as he stretched his hand to shake mine. I took his hand and the moment he touched it, I shivered. My God, I had to calm down. Just touching his warm hand had woken up desires I thought I had buried. I was like a starving animal who needed food. In my case, I needed a human touch. I needed a hug, the warmth, and protection of a man. I craved to be loved. I felt so lonely.

"Dr. Shaw? Ahm... I think there must be a mistake. I didn't ask for a lawyer. My lawyer left my case, as I couldn't pay him." I said. I thought he would have left the moment I mentioned money, but Dr. Shaw invited me to sit down.

"There is no mistake. Shannah told me you desperately need my help, and so here I am."

Oh my God, so he was Shannah's lawyer?

"Tell me, Melanie. How can I help you?"

"Well... I... I don't know if you've seen my file."

"Yeah, I've read your case. Actually, I'm intrigued."

"Intrigued?"

"Yeah, how did a young woman like you ended up tangled with a mysterious man who nobody knows? A man that doesn't exist?"

"That's what they said, but I'm not mad."

"Of that I'm sure. The case was closed quickly, too quickly. They all agreed you're guilty."
