The trip on the bus has been long and tiring. But I enjoyed looking at the beautiful scenery as we passed in front of hills and rivers. I had been locked for so long that I had forgotten how beautiful the world was. Nature got less as we entered and took the highway that led to the city. When we finally arrived it was past midday and I was starving. I will go and eat something after settling part of my debt with Dr Shaw. The bust stopped at the last stop and everybody went down including me. I didn't have a clue of where I was. I looked around hoping to see the Shaw and Stevenson Advocates but it was nowhere to be seen. I took my mobile and switched on the GPS. I wasn't far but I had to walk for about six meters and then turn right. I hurriedly walked along the narrow street and as I turned right I stopped in front of a huge building that looked too modern compared to the surroundings. I arrived at my destination. I sighed and wondered if I did well to come here without phoning, maybe he wasn't even here. How stupid of me. But now it was too late to think. I walked up the few steps which led to a massive reception where two clerks were busy answering phones and dealing with clients. I waited until one of them was free.
"Good afternoon, how can I help you?" The young clerk asked politely.
"I'm here to see Dr Shaw."
"Do you have an appointment?" She asked looking busily at the screen to check his appointments.
"Ahm, no but I'm here to pay him."
"Sorry Miss, but he doesn't see people without appointments."
"I see, but I came from out of town and it has been a long journey. Please, will you tell him Melanie Blake is here?"
She sighed and then reluctantly grabbed the phone. "He's in a meeting right now, I don't think he'll pick up the phone."
But he did.
"Hello, yes, sorry to disturb Dr. Shaw..... yeah I know. But there is a young woman at the reception who says she came to pay you. She's called Melanie Blake......... Dr Shaw? Are you still there?" The clerk asked after what must have been a long silence... "Hello?"
She put down the phone and looked at me. She looked embarrassed.
"I'm sorry Ms... but I think he won't see you."
"Oh...." I felt down. "Ok, thank you."
But as I turned around I almost bumped into someone.
"Ah.. excuse me I didn't..."
"Melanie!?"
"Dr Shaw?"
"What are you doing here?" He asked. I wondered if he was happy to see me. He seemed strange. His face showed no emotions so I couldn't tell. He looked nervous and kept looking around.
"I'm sorry I came without calling. I just wanted to give you the first payment."
"Oh, you could have sent a cheque, but I'm glad you didn't." He said then hinting a smile.
I wasn't too sure about that. He grabbed my shoulder. "Listen why don't we go out."
"What? Since you're here I'll offer you a coffee. I need a break too and if I stay at the office I'm sure the phone will keep ringing."
"Sorry to intrude, Dr Shaw," the clerk said. "But may I remind you that you have an appointment with Dr Lawson in half an hour."
"Tell Shaun to deal with him. I'm going out." He said without giving her time to say anything. "Come on let's go."
He seemed in a hurry. He pushed me softly from the back and led me outside.
"My car is over there." He said as he pointed towards a sports car.
