Chapter 11: Just Fabulous

A warm breeze ruffled the Nightmare Demon’s black coat as he stood out in the open docks. He was waiting. Waiting for his father and mentor, the one who still watched over the Nightmare Demon’s every move. While merely a protective measure, it could be rather suffocating at times. Parents just don’t get it. He thought to himself. Where the hell is he anyways?  Pulling out a mirror plated pocket watch, the Nightmare Demon watched as time ticked by. All too soon, it read 16:20, twenty minutes past midnight. He’s late. And all those times he disciplined me for being tardy.

Finally, a shadow of an enormous canine appeared, green eyes ablaze. It greeted with a metallic howl.

“You sure took your time” The Nightmare Demon addressed his father as he walked over to him “Heiros”

“That’s a freedom granted with age” Heiros Hawgon explained. “But with age, comes much experience”

“Excuses, excuses.  You’re not quite that old” The Nightmare Demon crossed his arms. “Yet”

Heiros could only chuckle. His son had quite the mouth on him. But, it was time to get back to more serious matters. There would be time for fun and games later. “You’ve followed my orders? You’ve been careful about your identity, yes?”

“Of course. I’m not stupid you know” The Nightmare Demon huffed.” No one else know who I am”

Heiros could tell he was upset with being treated like a small child, but it was for his own good. No matter how high an IQ he had, his son was still capable of the stupidest decisions and mistakes.

“Good. You’re vulnerable at this age and point in your life” Herios warned. “There is still much I have yet to teach you, things I have learned the hard way. Even then, you still lack real world experience”

“I know, I know!” Annoyance pricked his voice. “But what better way to learn than to go out on a real mission, fight real enemies?”

“What better way to get killed is more like it. You can’t just rush into a fight. And you shouldn’t go looking for trouble”  Hieros couldn’t stress this enough to his son True, these petty missions were far below his son’s ability. But, he felt better knowing that  these were something he could easily handle. Someday, he would allow his son to accompany him on a job more challenging. As for now, he would have to be content with being his father’s messenger boy.

“ And what do you mean real enemies? I keep telling you and telling you-“

“Yes, yes. Never underestimate your opponent” The Nightmare cut him off “you’ve only drilled that into my head a thousand times”

“Then you would do well to remember it.  Anyways, I need you to take a message for me to a very dear friend of mine. Who knows, perhaps he will have some chores for you.”

“You’re kidding!” Yelled the Nightmare Demon.

“Come now, you get to see your friend” attempted Hieros to make things a bit better “ I’m sure he’ll be happy to see you”

“Don’t know if I can say the same. I’ll most likely be blinded before then” The nightmare Demon growled.

Hieros let out a laugh. He had to admit, that comment sprung from a bit of truth. Indeed, his friend’s younger brother was rather flashy, but they were good allies to have in a world like this. After all, Information was just as important as the weapon one carried.
