"I've put up a list for your new portions and bathrooms. It's on the notice board of the veranda of Apartment B, C, and D." Ms began, halfway into our Saturday morning breakfast of Akara and Pap.
"I normally don't have to do this for other sets but you girls are so stupid to a fault. You get into the bathroom, sleep inside there and then say you were waiting for the other person to come out. I have never seen a set like this.
You girls are so slow, that is slow and slow to a fault. The worst set ever." She was demonstrating with her hands.
I couldn't understand why every set or class I was in always got pronounced as the worst set or class right from my primary school days.
"Academically you're not there for me, speed wise you're not there for me, morally you're not there for me. You girls are just error, the worst set I've come across." Ms paused to look around for some time.
"Maybe it's those ones promoted on trial. I don't know. I seriously feel, just maybe they are the ones pulling this set behind." She went on and it got me wondering how those promoted on trial had any relation to the subject matter. "Let me just get you in a bathroom that isn't yours, you'll will hate everything about yourself."
"And one more thing. You see as I am going for this Valedictory service today, you girls just better respect yourselves. Stay in the study or in the reff and read your books. If I come back and get anyone outside..." She sternly warned.
"Done eating? 3, 2, 1...Grace after meal." She announced without pause.
I was busy thinking of how I would sneak my food out. I wasn't really a fan of Akara.
"You would seat here and finish it, shey you want to be picking food? Nonsense!" Ms barked at some extras that had joined our table temporarily for that morning.
They were two and apparently they didn't like Pap.
"My friend would you eat fast, you think I have time for this nonsense." Ms barked at the extras again, banging the table loudly with her keys.
They both took a spoonful of their pap, with a frightened and miserable look plastered on their faces. It took everything for me not to burst into laughter there and then.
I hurriedly popped the last bit of Akara into my mouth before Ms would begin to tackle me as well. In the past few days I noticed that my eating table was particularly meant for the slow eaters and I didn't want to give her that impression, so hopefully I'd be evicted from the table.
"A minute longer here and you'll join the reff workers." I heard her say to the extras as I walked down the aisle on my way to the back.
"What a witch!" I laughed to myself, thinking of what had happened that early morning during the washing period.
I was literally just on my first cloth when Ms announced time up. I believed she had been joking till I saw people hastily rushing to the back. I was confused for a second but kept on with my washing, I felt they were being overly dramatic...till I heard a loud lash sound very close to me. Ms was lashing the girl right beside me.
I didn't need anyone to tell me before lifting up my bucket dashing off for my life. I ran for my life to the back just like the others.
She had of course eventually come to the back and how I had finshed my laundry without getting flogged was a testimony I hoped to give whenever I got the chance.
"Thank you ma." I voiced as I dropped my cutlery in my cutlery pouch.
No response as usual.
I stepped out of the reff. The two extras were still seated there looking even more miserable.
