Two weeks after visiting Hijiri's house
"Please, open the apartment door now!" A voice boomed. Kyoufu felt tears forming as he hid under the bed. "We will break this door down!" The voice boomed again. "What for?" Hiroshi called through the door. "You know why, either leave the apartment now. Or go to the police and ask them why you think we are removing you from the apartment." The voice said, seeming to get louder. "Alright alright, Kyoufu, you can stop hiding, we are leaving." Hiroshi said. Kyoufu got out from under the bed and ran up to Hiroshi. "Is it because the room smells like smoke? You told them it wasn't a fire, it was just the...oven right?" Kyoufu asked. Hiroshi nodded, and grabbed a small box, stuffing it in his pocket. "I guess they don't think it's the oven making the smokey smell." Hiroshi said. The two brothers walked out of the apartment. "You know smoking isn't allowed in apartment buildings, so we will have to fine you." The tall man said, after Hiroshi and Kyoufu left the apartment. "With a kid that young in the room too, not smart young man." He said. Hiroshi rolled his eyes. "How much do you want?" Kyoufu knew that money was tight, whatever that meant, so Hiroshi might not be able to pay the tall man the amount of money it takes. Kyoufu really wished his parents were here to get them out of this mess. "Come on Kyoufu, lets go." Hiroshi said. Kyoufu felt Hiroshi pick him up and sprint out of the building. "Get back here!" The tall man yelled. "You didn't pay him?" Kyoufu asked. "You want dinner tonight, right?" Hiroshi asked. Kyoufu nodded quickly. "Where are we going, the man stopped following us." Over the past week, Hiroshi had gotten his drivers license, so he could drive without adult supervision. They were really lucky that Hiroshi turned sixteen so recently.
Hiroshi got in the car and started the engine, driving down the street, to a place Kyoufu wasn't sure of. Until they arrived at another apartment building. It even said on the door that smoking was allowed. "Look, the sign says that if the ovens are smokey, it's ok." Kyoufu pointed to the smoking sign. "Yep, smokey ovens are okay." Hiroshi said. They got out of the car and walked into the apartment. "What's your name sir?" The girl at the desk asked. This building was different, it seemed less fancy. "Hiroshi Hidoi." Kyoufu's brother said. The girl nodded. "Alright I don't see you on the list, but that's okay, If I can just have you pay for your room right now, that would be-" "Is Hiroshi Hidoi here?" A man said, wearing a police uniform. Kyoufu always liked policemen but this one seemed scary. Hiroshi muttered a word that Kyoufu would call naughty, and his brother slowly turned around. "Um...yes?" He said. "Stop playing innocent, you're coming with me." The policeman walked over to Hiroshi and put something on his wrists so he couldn't escape. "What...what's going on big brother?" Kyoufu asked, his voice shaking. "Sorry Kyoufu, I'll be back, stay in this building." Hiroshi said. Kyoufu ran up to Hiroshi, but another policeman gently held him back. "We are going to have a talk with your big brother, he'll be back soon." The man gave Kyoufu a nice smile, which calmed him down a little. "Okay...but...it's not Hiroshi's fault that the oven was smokey!" Kyoufu said. The policeman looked confused, but then realized Kyoufu didn't know what smoking was. "The oven was smokey, but it was your brother's fault." He said. Kyoufu frowned. "Whatever you say...Mr. Policeman..." Kyoufu watched the police car drive away, with Hiroshi in the back of it. "Will he be back soon?" Kyoufu asked the lady by the desk. "Yes, he will, in the meantime, want to stick with me?" She asked. Kyoufu nodded and walked up to her.
It was starting to get dark outside, when Hiroshi finally walked into the apartment. "Big brother! You're back! Did they believe you?" Kyoufu asked. Hiroshi shook his head. "But it's okay, we'll be safe in this apartment building." Kyoufu nodded slowly. "If you say so..." Hiroshi started talking to the lady at the desk, and soon they were walking to their new apartment, one that was safer and didn't mind the smokey ovens.
Kyoufu looked around the new apartment. It looked less fancy and more worn down. It was smaller than the other apartment too. Kyoufu wanted to be back at the other apartment, or even better, at his old home. "Kyoufu, you should go to bed. You can sleep in the big room tonight, I'm going to stay up a little later than usual." Hiroshi said. Kyoufu nodded and looked around the apartment for a big room with a bed. He found a bedroom, but it was smaller than he expected. He climbed into the bed anyway. He wasn't cold going to bed. Sleeping in a bed, it reminded him of his old house. His bed was warm and there was always a night light. Here, however, it was dark. Kyoufu could barely see his hand in front of him. It was almost scary, if not for Hiroshi's hushed voice, coming from the other room.
