Sean sat in the desk next to her and watched as she finished reading the sheet explaining the essay she was going to write for him. She looked at him and said "Mr. Alley this- this is very specific. What does this have to do with the things we are learning this year?" He knew that after reading the objective for the essay (the objective being she had to write at least four pages on the true meaning of happiness) he knew she would ask that question. He smiled and said to her "Well, we are going to read Macbeth and that involves some happiness in a way, we are going to read and watch Beowulf and then there will be a point in the year where you will get to read three books of your choosing and it will be a unit basically. But we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. Casey you're really talented and I hate to see you not enjoy this." She laughed and said "who says I don't enjoy writing. I love it but I just think of it as more of a hobby. I wouldn't go into the writing profession as I don't feel that strongly enough about it. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy it." He nodded and understood her point of view but he still thought that she should be a writer. He knew her passion was in the kitchen. This was because of all the food and goodies she would make and bring in for her friends and teachers. He had remembered this one day she had said she had gotten up very early in the morning and made the most amazing breakfast burritos and had individually wrapped them in tinfoil and had give them to friends and teachers in the morning. Although this was his first year at Paradise Diamond High School and he knew this was her senior year, he couldn't help but think she should stay but he knew that was impossible. It was early November and she was on the school swim team she was training for sectionals and he could tell she was maybe gaining muscle weight as she ate more in class and she came to school sometimes with an actual protein filled breakfast. He watched her as she wrote the beginning of her essay with her headphones in. That was another thing with Casey, she loved listening to her music when she wrote essays. As it got closer to the end of the block neither of them had moved an inch until she checked the time on her phone and she quickly started putting her things away and took of her headphones and put them in her bag with her phone. She looked at him as he was staring at her with a slight smile on his fave and puzzled she said "What? What is it?" He smiled bigger and shook his head, "Nothing." He said. "No. What? Why did you look at me like that?" He replied simply "Because you are adorable when you get nervous. I know this is not the time or place to say that but, its true." Her eyes got wide and she said "We can't. Not here. Not now. We just- can't." He nodded and watched as she turned and left to go to her next class. He couldn't stop thinking about her after that. He had to do something about this blood boiling feeling that kept starting inside him. He couldn't get the image of her beautiful face as she had hurried to pack up and leave just a while before. He had only to get through activity period and if he could get through that it would be a fucking miracle. He was going to get her to go to dinner with him tonight even if it meant he had to break an arm and a leg to get her to go with him and if that failed he could just ask her to dinner at his place. But he was going to have a hard time controlling his blood boiling feelings. If he couldn't make a move at dinner like she had done a few days ago in the classroom when it was just them then he would start breaking the student/teacher rules and show her how he felt when they were alone in his room. He felt an obligation to her an obligation to love and protect her.
