The day was waning as the blue sky turned dark. The trees wrestled and glowed deeper green, with the wind rustling the leaves. It wasn't dark enough to be after sunset, but the essence of stars was beginning to glow in the sky.
Shane's name was yelled out numerous times over the forest. The yelling was from Paris, who constantly ran around the woods looking for him. She twisted and turned her head many times as she stopped to search for him, but she was becoming exhausted.
"SHANE? SHANE! PLEASE COME BACK! SHANE!" This was repeated multiple times before she made her way to the clearing that led to the water tower at the cliffside. When she stopped, she found him there, sitting up against the tower with his knees to his chest and his hand covering his mouth and nose.
More tears filled his eyes as his shame and guilt hardened his emotions. His spirit was crushed enough, and he couldn't bear to face anyone at the moment. He couldn't even bother to sniff the air as he picked up the scents of Tex and Emily, which were still fresh from their time together the previous night.
"Shane," Paris shouted out once more before she rushed over to the tower but stayed back at the threshold of the clearing to keep a distance from him. "There you are; I have been looking for you."
"Please, Paris. Go back to the others," was all he could say to her in a cracked voice. "I don't want you to get caught up in all of this; it doesn't concern you. I just want to be left alone. It's what I'm used to anyway." His voice grew soft and saddened.
"No, I will not leave you here alone," Paris said, defending her stance. "Look, I do not know what exactly has been going on between you, Tex, and Emily. But I have seen enough drama shows to know that they have depicted the worst situations of love triangles. I do not want you to feel like you are in one of those. I know I am new, but I want to help. I do not want to see you hurt yourself like this. Just please answer me, why is it that you cannot open up about your emotions and be honest with them? If you answer them, it could help with sorting things out with Tex. Trust me, Shane. You can trust me with your honesty."
Paris sounded as sincere as she could even though some points in her message sounded very awkward. But she wanted to help Shane out so she could get him back to the team, and they could go after Tex to save Emily's life. But Shane was still sitting, silent and unresponsive. But hearing her words made him respond with a soft sound, "That's exactly what she told me." Paris became confused as to who "she" was.
"She said I can be honest with myself. Except I...I never could do that."
Shane pulled out his phone from inside his pocket, pulled up a video under his photos app, and then slid it across the ground to reach Paris at her feet. She picked up the phone and, after looking at him first, pressed play on the video's play icon.
