"M-Mitch?" I stammered.
Alex sighed. "I thought that since you two have been best friends for over a decade now, he knows how you can handle things, how you cope. He told me to just rip the band-aid off. So I did."
I shook my head, running a hand through my hair.
Mitch told Alex to break up with me? Well, he gave Alex advice on how to break up with me, but you know, same difference.
"Mitch?" I called.
Mitch walked in a few moments later. "Yeah, Scott?"
"Is it true that you gave Alex advice on how to break up with me?"
Mitch's brow furrowed. "Say what now?"
"Don't play dumb, Mitch." Alex says with a roll of his eyes.
Mitch glances at Alex, then to me, then back to Alex. "I have no idea what's going on here..."
Did Alex lie about Mitch giving him advice? Then again, Mitch is an incredible actor...
"Mitch, come on!" Alex begged, walking up to him and grabbing him by the shoulders. "Back me up here."
I saw Mitch's eyes flitting across Alex's face before his gaze narrowed. "I don't know what you're talking about, Alexander."
Alex's eyes closed as he let out a deep breath. He opened his eyes again. "You can play dumb all you want, Mitch, but all it's doing is hurting Scott."
Mitch and I made eye contact for a split second before Mitch turned his attention back to Alex.
"I didn't know it would hurt Scott so much. I'm sorry." Mitch confessed, looking down to the floor.
Alex nods, lifting his hands from Mitch's shoulders and letting them rest at his side. He turns on his heel and walks to me. "There's your proof, Scott."
"You didn't think I would be hurt?" I repeated.
Mitch avoided my gaze.
"Look at me, Mitch." I growled.
Mitch licked his lips, looking up at me but still not making eye contact with me.
"In the eyes, Mitch."
Mitch looks at me with his warm brown eyes, biting his lips.
"I loved Alex." I said. "You knew that. You know that. We'd been dating for almost three years. How could you think I wouldn't be hurt?"
"Scott, I..." Mitch began, but his voice trailed off and he looked down at his hands. He looks back up at me, clenching his hands into fists. "I don't know..."
I raised an eyebrow expectantly.
"I didn't expect any of this to happen. Honest." Mitch explains. "I know you don't like being sugarcoated, so I told Alex to just do it. Rip off the band-aid. He told me that both of you knew that y'all just weren't working out, so I thought you would part with a friendly hug and then just move on.
"But when I found you bawling your eyes out under the porch light with the fireflies... I felt this wave of guilt wash over me. I didn't think that that would happen..."
Mitch's usually bright eyes were now glossy with tears. "I'm so sorry, Scott. Truly, I am. I don't expect you to, but will you forgive me?"
I studied Mitch for a second, the way his body shook with his tears. I watched the tears roll down his cheeks. I looked into his pleading eyes.
"Leave, Alex." I said.
Alex nods once, then shows himself out.
I watched Alex leave, then I looked at Mitch once again.
He gave Alex the advice that broke my heart. Can I forgive him for that?
I walked up to Mitch. He lets out a little gasp as he looked up at me. His brown doe eyes widened.
I wrapped him in a tight hug. Mitch visibly relaxed, hugging me back and crying into my shoulder.
"I'm sorry," I began. "But I can't forgive you."
"Wh-what?" Mitch breathes, wriggling out of my arms.
"I can't forgive you, Mitch. I'm sorry."
Mitch bursts into tears and he runs off to his bedroom, slamming the door hard enough to make the house shake.
