"Mr. Stark!" Peter yells as Ironman swoops down beside him. He lands and takes off his suit retracts as he walks to sit next to Spidey on the rooftop. "Hey, bud. How's patrol so far?"
Peter immediately launches into a rant that lasts the better part of an hour until he's interrupted by his special ringtone for May. Tony gestures for him to take the call and he answers. "Hey, Aunt May!"
He nods his head after a couple of seconds and looks dejected. He then listens intently for multiple minutes before widening his eyes and shaking his head rapidly. "May! No! I'm not asking hi-" He cuts himself off and stares wide-eyed at Tony, who's looking back at him with raised eyebrows.
'What?' Tony mouths and Peter shakes his head, before sighing the biggest sigh to ever be sighed and holding his phone out, putting it on speaker. "Tony?" May calls.
"Hey, May. What's got Peter all riled up?"
"Oh, you know. The usual: he's worried about asking to stay the night. Can he? I've got to work all night and he lost his keys."
Tony scoffs and ruffles Peter's hair, and ignoring his indignant 'hey!', answers May, "Oh, yeah. Of course he can. Kid is always welcome at the tower. He's really best buds with the Avengers and thinks that he can't stay the night. This kid." Tony sighs at the end, sounding exasperated and fond all at the same time.
"Oh, thanks Tony! I have to go but be safe! Love you, Pete! Thanks again, Tony."
"Of course. Anything for my favorite spideing and his aunt."
Tony can almost hear Peter rolling his eyes through the mask as he says his goodbyes to May before hanging up.
"Am I swinging?"
Tony gives him a look that says 'absolutely not' and Peter just shakes his head, grabbing onto the forming ironman gear. Tony pats him on the head and they make their way to the tower.Tony scrolls on his Starkpad, occasionally looking up and making his weird thinking face before going back to scrolling. Peter watches him from his spot perched on a bright red, Spider-Man-themed beanbag that Mr. Stark had gotten him as a gag gift. Tony lifts his eyes up to check on Peter only to widen when he sees Peter staring at him. He sighs and sets his Starkpad down. "Alright kid. What is it?"
Peter shakes his head. "Oh! Uh- nothing. It's nothing. Sorry for bothering you."
Tony gives him a look and he bites his lip, glancing at the ground before lifting his gaze back to the older man. "I uh- I think I want to go see the intern labs. I've been thinking about it and I figured it would be a good idea to meet the other interns, but-"
Tony cuts him off and stands up, stretching his arms out and popping his back with a dramatic groan, "Nonsense. Nothing to worry about, kid. Let's go."
Tony turns and makes his way out of the room, his superhero intern rushing to catch up with the quick pace.Peter paces the entire ride in the elevator and even apologizes to the wall when he bumps into it. He ignores Tony's assurances and fidgets with his fingers nervously. The elevator rings and Tony puts an arm around him, leading him into a bustling hallway, through an open area and then into a waiting room of sorts. "This is for breaks." He explains as Peter glances nervously around the room.
A blond girl with bright green eyes approaches them and sticks out her hand. "Hi! I'm Myra! I've heard so much about you and your genius. It's nice to meet you. I go by they/she pronouns."
Peter shoots a worried look at Tony, but he pulls his arms away and steps back, hands raised. Peter turns his gaze back to Myra and awkwardly slips his hand into hers for a few moments before pulling back. "Uh- hi. It's nice to meet you. I'm Peter. Wait- uhm, you knew that. Sorry. Uh, I go by He/Him."
Myra shakes their head, not at all phased by his awkwardness. "Hi, Peter! I need some help supervising our chemical reactions unit. Want to help?"
Peter glances at Tony who nods. "Go ahead. That's why I brought you down here. Go be a social butterfly and leave me to rot." Peter rolls his eyes but he seems to ease up, his tense frame relaxing a little. "I'd love to! What are you guys doing?"
Myra starts explaining and Tony smiles, sitting down on a light green couch. He picks up a magazine and idly flips through for around a half hour until he's interrupted by a cough. He startled and raises his gaze to see a tall redhead man with a lanky frame, staring down at him through his lab goggles. "Uhm. Excuse me, Mr. Stark? Peter made a breakthrough and we normally radio it through the intercom but Peter mentioned that you were in here so I thought I would tell you. He uh- it's something pretty extraordinary."
Tony smiles at the kid and gets up. "Of course he did. I leave him alone for what? A half hour? And he's already making scientific breakthroughs. That kid." Tony shakes his head fondly and follows the abnormally tall intern into the lab that Peter seems to have made his temporary home. He's explaining something about science, Tony can tell from the look in his eye. He's gesturing wildly and pointing to a chalk board that seems like more chalk than board. Peter gets a glance of Tony and rushes over to him, planting a hand on his arm. "Mr. Stark! You won't believe what I did! Remember that lab session from last week? The one about the explosions and the unknown substance? Well I figured it out! It's an element!"
Tony gives him a wide-eyed look and turns to the faces of the shocked interns. Peter takes his reaction in stride, continuing on as if nothing happened. "An element! I discovered a new element! Ned will never believe this. "
Tony, eyes still wide with amazement and shock, sends him a fond look and ruffles his hair. "Only you, kid. Only you."
Peter doesn't even seem fazed by the hair ruffle and instead furrows his brow. "What do you mean? What are you talking about?"
Tony rolls his eyes, turning to the chalk board and reading through the mess of equations. "I'm just saying I don't know any other teenagers that would discover a new element in half an hour when they decide to talk to people. You should socialize more often."
Peter's the one rolling his eyes now. He nudges Tony with his arm and Tony finishes reading his sentence before turning to his kid and setting a hand on his shoulder. "Proud of you, Pete. Always am." He turns his gaze to the gathering crowd of scientists, "I'm proud of all of you, too! This is exactly what I envisioned when I hired you all. Keep it up! There will be a party next week, and yes it will be allergy friendly!Okay, folks. We have to go but Peter will be back tomorrow! We need to discuss this with some boring government officials and figure it all out. Have a good day and you're all getting a raise!" Cheers erupted after Tony's speech before he did a dramatic bow and hauled Peter out the door and into the elevator.
"Proud of you, kid," Tony says into Peter's hair, giving a dramatic smooch on his curls and squeezing his shoulder from where his arm is still wrapped around him.
Peter smiles, "Thanks, Mr. Stark."
"Always, kiddo. Let's go talk to Brucie, huh?"
"Yeah," Peter nods and leans further into Tony's side, amazed at himself and thankful for his amazingly supportive mentor.
