Chapter Nine: Reaction

“What is the plan? We’ve been running around for the last two week like headless chickens with no actual purpose.”

Aidan stared forlornly at Aednat who couldn’t bother to return the stare. She was too busy keeping Mingy’s hands off of her breasts. Prentiss, on the other hand, was focused solely on Aidan. She was tired of running away from vampires, who were everywhere. There had to be someplace where they were safe, at least for more than one night.

“The plan is to keep you alive.”

Aidan finally said after some time. He unclenched his jaw when he met her gaze. Prentiss shook her head while shrugging.

“What good is that going to do if there isn’t a place where we can be safe? Don’t demigods have like, head quarters or a safe haven?”

She asked a little too loudly. The person sitting in the booth behind her looked at her funny. Aidan glared long enough to make the man turn around without a word.

“We don’t help each other. And the only one who can help you is the one who made you into a monster magnet. Other than that, we just keep running.”

Prentiss bowed her head. She was afraid he was going to say that. It had been two weeks and four days since she last saw her mother. She’d spoken to her on the phone a few times but each call was cut short. The vampire attacks had been way more frequent. It seemed every where they went vampires were waiting for them. In fact, she was sure some of them were probably there at the rundown dinner just waiting for the ripe moment to strike.

“I’m sure there is someone we can talk to that would help. Not all demigods are douche bags, right?”

The long empty stare he gave her confirmed that she was wrong and also an idiot for asking. She knew by now that there was no such thing as a decent demigod.

“Duck!”

Mingy said before a male body sailed inches above Prentiss head.

There was no such thing as a civilized vampire either. The dinner’s normal atmosphere turned chaotic in two seconds flat. People screamed and ran for the exit. Aidan grabbed Prentiss hand and pulled her out of the booth then ran with her nearly gasping beside him. The only good thing about being on the run was that she got a daily workout.

Everything else sucked.

They made it to the Bentley in record time and pulled out just moments before a herd of vampires that seemingly appeared from the depth of the black night sky began their attack. Prentiss heart beat again so fast that she wasn’t sure if it would ever slow.

It did eventually.

“You know, there might be a place for you guys to go.”

Mingy said playing around with her black clutch. Prentiss stopped staring out of the window and looked at her. Aidan gave her a curious look in the rearview mirror.

“Who do you know that would help us without receiving anything in exchange because after they meet her, Prentiss would be the object of negotiation.”

Mingy smiled.

“Diamond’s sister of course. She’s the one that would help anyone, including a human.”
