"So, when are you going to tell me why I needed to cover for you last week?" Birdie sucks down an orange Fanta through a straw at the food court.
Birdie and I make plans to go to the mall together on the following Friday afternoon of my birthday before boxing practice. I haven't seen her in quite a few days, so it'll be nice to spend some time together.
It's not normal for us to go more than three days without each others company. But between college preparation, her spending time with Josh, and me spending time with Justin, separation is slowly becoming normalcy.
I was bracing for this question. I knew it would be a matter of time before she asked, but I didn't think it would be exactly eleven minutes into us hanging out.
I should have known better than to think otherwise.
"Thanks for doing that, by the way," I set my Cherry Coke down on the sticky table.
"Stop stalling!" she bangs her fist down. "Tell me what's going on!"
"Alright," I settle back into my chair. "I was with someone."
Her eyes widen, strawberry colored lips parting in shock. "Jane. Were you, or were you not with Cole Byron."
"I was not," I laugh. "I told you, there's nothing between us. I swear to you."
She shakes her head, her face scrunching in confusion. "Well, then who the fuck were you with?"
I'm so tired of lying to Birdie, and after my conversations with Justin I'm feeling ready to tell people about us. I know I really can't, but would it be so bad to tell Birdie I'm seeing someone even if I can't mention who he is?
"You don't know him." It's a lie. "We met at the beach a couple of weeks ago. Remember when I met up with my family? He's a friend of one of my cousins."
"Jane! What the fuck?" she exclaims. "That was over a month ago! Why didn't you tell me?"
"I don't know!" I blush at the thought of Justin who is actually the man I'm speaking of. "I didn't want to jump the gun, you know?"
"Jesus Christ," she mutters, pairing it with an eye roll. "You're going to put me in an early grave. Can I see what he looks like, at least?"
I shake my head. "Sorry. I don't have any pictures of him. He's very private. But I promise you, he's really cute. I think you'd like him."
I think back to when Birdie said Justin was cute before we even met each other, and back when she said we'd have beautiful babies. I wish I could tell her it was him.
And while I'm wishing for things, I wish she could be excited for me.
"Did you at least invite him later?" she asks, looking entirely defeated.
"Yes, I did actually," I nod, resting my chin in my hand.
She perks up in response.
"But he can't come," I let her down slowly.
"What? Why?" she groans like a little kid whose mom tells her no when she wants ice cream before dinner. The tone is uncanny.
"He's already got plans, unfortunately. He's spending the weekend with his family at their lake house."
"On your birthday weekend?" she raises an eyebrow in disapproval.
I laugh. "He had this planned before we met. But he promised we'd do something when he gets back."
I remember Justin telling me he had something planned for me tomorrow. It makes my stomach flutter with excitement.
"You know, I really want to be mad at you right now, but I won't be because it's your birthday. And you're fucking glowing right now talking about this guy," she grumbles in the most Birdie fashion.
