On my way to Justin's that night after careless departures from my family, I decide to call Birdie from the car. She's leaving tomorrow for Kent, so I owe it to her.

"Do you think Josh will still reach out?" she asks.

"Maybe. He'd be stupid not to."

She sighs. "I mean, he'll be at Alabama. That's like, really far away. He has no obligation to me."

"He hasn't asked you to be his girlfriend?"

"No. Should he have?"

It doesn't surprise me that he hasn't asked. Josh doesn't strike me as the type to think of anyone but himself. I'm not sure that I'd peg him as a selfish person, more or less one-track minded. He puts one hundred percent into whatever feels necessary at that time, whether it's sports or school or family.

But it's never been Birdie. Not yet, and not any time in the near future.

Though she can't see me, I shrug. "I don't know. Just don't stress about it, okay?"

She groans. "I hate this. I felt like we had so much time before we went off to school. There's so much I wanted to do but can't now because summer is over!"

"Like what?" I laugh.

"I don't know! I was going to get my nose pierced and spend way more time at the beach. I was also hoping that I'd be Josh's girlfriend, all of which I haven't done!"

"There's still time to get your nose pierced, Birdie."

"Come with me tomorrow morning before I have to go?"

My body feels warm. "Deal."

"You know, I also never got to meet this mystery guy of yours. The one who I keep having to cover for you for. Isn't some compensation in order?

Again, I laugh. "Maybe."

"Maybe? You mean you'll tell me who he is? I have Instagram open now. What's his name?"

Her eagerness is endearing. I'll miss it when I'm gone.

She's one person from home I'll try to maintain a relationship with, so I'll make sure not to miss her too much by keeping in contact.

Because I'm leaving it all behind, I have this careless urge to just spill the truth to Birdie. I mean, there's no sense in hiding it anymore. I'm leaving, she's leaving, so we have no obligation to the societal standards of Redlake. Even if she disagrees with me, calls me an idiot and threatens to tell my parents, it won't matter because by the time she does it, it'll be too late.

It's already too late because our minds have been made up.

"You won't find him on Instagram," I say.

"Facebook, then? LinkedIn?"

"No, not those either," I chuckle.

She sighs frustratedly. "Can you at least send me a picture then?"

"I'm driving, so no. But I can just tell you, only if you swear on your life you not only won't tell, but you'll stay calm too."

"Why wouldn't I be calm? Just tell me!"

I sigh. "Birdie. Please swear to me you'll keep this between me and you. Please. I'll never ask you for anything else."

She pauses. She's racking her brain for who this person could be that would prompt me to beg for her silence and cooperation.

Then, she says, "Promise."

"Birdie, I'm serious. You can't tell anybody or I'll never talk to you again."
