Remus sat in the library with Mary across from him. They were both studying textbooks for their separate classes, when Remus looked up and stared at her. He couldn't help but wonder what he was doing.

She met his eyes.

"Remus..." she said softly. Her smile gave everything away: she knew. "Dating me just so Ashley will move on isn't going to work."

"I know."

"So why are you doing it?"

Why was he doing it?

His mind felt like someone had flicked the switch, there was no going back.

"Why am I doing it?" he said out loud.

Mary looked startled, but smiled when he ran out of the library. She waited for him to come back, which he did in a few seconds.

"I forgot my books," he explained, gathering them into his book bag. "Also, umm... can we break up or whatever the right word is?"

He looked at her hopefully.

"Of course," she giggled.

He nodded, slightly befuddled by the situation, and then ran off again.

Where was he running, you may ask. He was running to the spot beneath the tree, by the black lake, because that's where Ashley was. He had it all planned out. He was going to fall to his knees and beg for forgiveness. He was going to beg for her to take him back until she did. He would explain that he had thought he was too much of a monster for her to date him. He had let those thoughts get to him until he grew distant, hoping she would grow to despise him and break up with him. He had dated Mary MacDonald in order for Ashley to hate him even more. But now... he had realised that he had been so, so very stupid. He had realised he was a daft idiot who would never survive without her. He would beg to be her daft idiot again.

And so he did...

So... this book has come to the end. The last few chapters were just me having a hard time saying goodbye to the characters I've come to love.

In the comments: who's your favourite, Mavis or Ashley?

Hope you enjoyed.
