Three days passed by in a whirlwind of classes, studying, and lingering tension between Harry and Draco. Despite their failed attempt at reconciling, Harry couldn't help but feel a flicker of hope when he saw Draco in the corridors or during meals. He noticed Draco's guarded glances, the occasional flash of regret in his eyes, but there was also a resolute determination to keep his distance.
Meanwhile, Harry found solace in spending time with Ron and Hermione. They had been through so much together, and their bond had only strengthened after the war.Yet, Harry couldn't shake off the thought of what might have been if he and Draco had managed to become roommates. He wondered if they would have had a chance to truly understand each other, to build a connection that transcended their shared history.
One afternoon, as Harry sat in the library with Hermione, engrossed in his studies, an owl swooped down and dropped a letter on his table. Harry recognized the neat handwriting as McGonagall's and quickly unfolded the parchment. His eyes scanned the words, and his heart skipped a beat as he read the unexpected news.
"Harry," Hermione asked, noticing his sudden change in demeanor. "What's wrong?"
Harry looked up at her, his voice barely a whisper. "McGonagall wants to see both me and Draco in her office. She's assigned us as roommates."
Hermione's eyes widened in surprise. "Really? After Draco declined your offer?"
Harry nodded, a mix of emotions coursing through him. "I guess McGonagall thought it would be best for us to sort things out, considering our living arrangements. She must have remembered that I wanted to room with Draco."
"But Harry, are you ready for this? Living with Draco will be challenging, especially if he's not willing to give you a chance," Hermione said, concern etched on her face.
"I don't know, Hermione. I thought maybe there was a chance, but now I'm not so sure. Draco seemed pretty set on keeping his distance," Harry admitted, his voice tinged with disappointment.
Hermione placed a comforting hand on Harry's shoulder. "Whatever happens, Harry, remember that you have our support. We'll be here for you, no matter what."
With Hermione's words echoing in his mind, Harry made his way to McGonagall's office. The walk felt longer than usual, each step laden with anticipation and uncertainty. When he arrived, he took a deep breath and knocked on the door.
"Enter," came McGonagall's voice from inside.
Harry opened the door and stepped into the headmistress's office. Draco was already there, standing near the window, his posture rigid. McGonagall looked up from her desk, her expression unreadable.
"Mr. Potter, Mr. Malfoy, please have a seat," she gestured to the chairs in front of her desk. Harry and Draco took their places, both of them avoiding eye contact.
"I called you here because I've made a decision regarding your living arrangements," McGonagall began, her voice firm yet compassionate. "After considering the circumstances and the current occupancy in the dormitories, I have decided to assign you both as roommates."
Harry's eyes widened, and he glanced at Draco, who remained silent, his face a mask of indifference. McGonagall continued, her gaze shifting between the two young wizards.
"I understand that you have had your differences in the past, but I believe this could be an opportunity for growth and understanding. Living together might prove challenging, but it could also offer a chance for reconciliation and a fresh start. The choice is ultimately yours, but I encourage you to consider the possibilities. Plus I would like to remind both of you that one of you is living alone and another with 2 other in a dorm meant for two"
Harry felt a mixture of apprehension and a glimmer of hope stir within him. He had wanted this chance, but now that it was being presented to him, he couldn't help but feel a pang of doubt. He knew that Draco's willingness to accept this arrangement was crucial.
Draco finally spoke up, his voice cool and detached. "Professor, I appreciate your consideration, but I must admit that I have reservations about living with Potter. Our history is far from ideal, and I'm not sure if sharing a room would be in our best interests."
Harry remained silent, his thoughts racing. He wanted to speak up, to convey his desire for a fresh start, but he also respected Draco's reservations. He knew that forcing the issue could make things worse.
Minerva looked at Harry's saddened face and Draco's face mixed with different emotions. Before the woman present there could say anything Draco spoke out "Ok, I agree, just because I know how to respect elders, as you have requested me to share. But if there is a minor problem with my roommate, I would go back to as it was" Draco put his head down as he noticed Harry's eyes lighten and a smile at the corner of his lips. Draco's cheeks filled up with blood. McGonagall smiled at the two of them, making Draco blush even more. Draco got up quickly "The room is in the past Ravenclaw dormitory" Draco told Harry without making eye contact. "Thank you Miss McGonagall!" Draco did an aggressive bow and went away quickly from her office
"Thank you so much Miss" Harry thanked her politely and walked out of her office. Minerva whispered to herself smiling "Kids nowadays".
