"The dragon's spike must have caused this when I got caught up on its tail," I said as Niamh finished bandaging my wound with a piece of cloth she tore from her clothes.
"Now, how is that?" She inquired.
"Ah, sure, it'll have to do," I said as I moved my arm around. As I looked around I noticed a bright red substance oozing from the newly formed rock wall. It cascaded down in a trickling motion. I quickly held out my sword and Niamh had already ripped off some of her clothing.
"Here!" She said with a grin.I stuck my sword into the red substance and it heated my blade. Then I quickly wrapped the strip of material around the tip. The heated blade melded the cloth ever so slightly, just enough to make it adhere to the steel. I created a torch by putting my weapon into the increasingly cooling molten rock.
The lava was turning darker in colour with the colder air in this area.
"It's a lot colder in here, does that mean we're finished?" Niamh asked.
"What do ya mean? Finished what?"
"Sídh, have we gone through Sídh?" She enquired again.
"What? No, I don't know." I said, "Just, come on, let's keep going."We walked on about three steps and-
"But we've been through the fire part, so-"
"Red, ya know, I don't know everything. I don't have all the answers!" I snapped.
I pulled her close with one arm and kissed her on top of the head.
"That was probably just a refuelling place for the dragons."
We both laughed.Holding up my sword torch I could now see how dark and uninviting this place was.
"Come on," I said. "Let's keep moving."
"Do you know where you're going?"
"No, but there's only one way to go."
We both advanced into the darkness. It got colder the further we went.Travelling for a while I couldn't help thinking about my unborn child.
"Niamh?"
"Aye, that's me!" she smiled.
"Have you thought of any names for our child yet?""Hmmm?" She thought while brushing her figures through her hair. Then rubbing the back of her neck she smiled and said, "How about Finn if it's a boy?"
"Aye, wait, you're just thinking about Finn McCool again!""Oh yes, sure haven't ya seen the paintings O'Neill done of him?"
"O'Neill? Aw, but sure amn't I thinking more of his wife!" I retorted, feeling chuffed with myself.
"Less of that!" Niamh warned and punched me in my wounded shoulder.
"Aaaaow! *Máthair Dé an Talamh!" I yelled.*"Och...., tá brón orm!" Niamh sympathised.
"It's alright, I'll live." I smiled through clenched teeth.
We started walking again when Niamh felt a water droplet on her arm and then again on her face.
"What's this?" she inquired.
"What's what? I asked. "Oh never mind, I felt it too. Probably just dampness from the ceiling."Gradually it became brighter. The new illumination seemed to emanate from above. I raised my sword and looked up. A flame seemed to flicker from the roof. I couldn't quite make it out but it looked distorted. I moved my sword to get a better view. But the light above moved in the same direction.
"What kind of trickery is this?" I said aloud.
"Give me that!" Niamh said and hid the light beneath my shield and both lights disappeared. "I knew it!"
"But how can this be?" I asked. She removed the shield and it became bright once more. Reaching down I picked up a stone and threw it towards the fantom light. There was a splash and the light moved as if underwater. The stone never returned to the ground.
Suddenly the hairs began to stand on my arms as a choir of unearthly cries filled the cave. Following the wails to the roof, we soon caught sight of where they came from. Hundreds of floating objects covered the roof, wandering for an eternity between both worlds. Trapped in a watery prison that defied reason. Lamenting a life they once had and a peace they will never obtain.
"Your stone must have disturbed them!" Niamh yelled.
"Well, let's hope they can't get out of that water."
"I know, come on, let's not wait around to find out!"
We ran and never looked back.Moving at such a fast pace my sword lost its flame and I lost my footing. The ground advanced almost immediately and I just managed to save my face with my outstretched hands. Rolling around on my back I couldn't help but laugh.
"You gobshite, are ya alright?" Niamh asked.
"Yes, here help me up," I said as I offered my hand in the darkness.
Suddenly a whoosh and a splash of wetness across my hand and face. Everything went quiet.*Máthair Dé an Talamh! - Mother of the Earth
