Sophie
"... I never told you my last name." Sophie said in a dark tone. "I don't know who you are, or where I am. I will tell you who I am if you give me a reason to trust you. But first, how do you know my name?"
Chiron seemed to look her over, eyebrow raised. After a moment he said, "Alright. Here's what I know. For a long time now, the gods and I have known of your species's existence. The elves. I was there all those thousands of years ago, when elves and humans lived together. I was there at the sinking of Atlantis, and at the Peace Treaty when humans declared themselves separate. We have been watching the elves to see if they would ever become useful, or dangerous. Mr. Forkle, as you call him, approached us to inform us about Project Moonlark. He was incredibly vague about the specifics, but he made it clear that the Project would be a game changer. He never told us what, or who, the Project was. It was only recently when he informed us that you were Project Moonlark."
"A game changer." Sophie stared into the fire. The phrase game-changer had been used numerous times. She never realized that that's what she was.
Then she realized what Chiron had said. "Wait, did you say gods? As in, the Greek gods?" She thought back to the strange creatures she had seen earlier. Centaurs, satyrs, Hera. "What is this place?"
Chiron winced. "Forgive my maladroitness. Perhaps we should start from the beginning? Are you familiar with the Greek myths?"
Sophie nodded. "Of course, but I'm assuming they actually aren't myths?"
Chiron nodded. "Correct. In short, the gods have been following Western Civilization around, wherever the center of influence is strongest. They also have kids with humans. Their kids are called demigods. Demigods are often played by monsters wanting to kill them. This camp is a safe place for those demigods. Camp Half-Blood."
"The person who brought me here. She said her name was Hera." Sophie recalled.
Chiron muttered a string of words under his breath. "Hera. Of course. Did she say why she brought you here?"
Sophie shook her head. "She just dropped me off here and took away anything I could use to get back to the Lost Cities. Although..." She drifted off, not sure if she should tell him about her teleportation.
"What is it?" Chiron had a lifted eyebrow. He could tell that she was hiding something.
"I can teleport." Sophie told him reluctantly.
Chiron's eyebrows shot up. "That is... unexpected. So why didn't you just do that when we found you?"
"Well for one," Sophie started to explain, "it isn't very practical. I either have to be free-falling or going really fast. Also, I don't know, I just felt that I'm needed here."
Chiron nodded. "I believe you are. Do you know who Kronos is?"
Sophie furrowed her eyebrows. "Isn't he the guy who ate his kids, then got thrown in a prison place? I don't remember the full story."
"That's part of it. He is a Titan. He ate his kids, the gods, when they were born, afraid that they would overthrow them. They escaped, and did end up overthrowing him. They cut him up with his own weapon and threw his remains in Tartarus."
Sophie grimaced. "Oh. That's... Gross."
Chiron continued. "For centuries, he has stayed down there, until recently. He has reformed, and has amazed an army large enough to destroy the camp." Chiron finished gravely. Sophie bowed her head, eyebrows furrowed with thought.
"I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do." Sophie started slowly, lifting her head. "Elves... don't deal with violence and killing very well. The guilt of ending a life can shatter our minds. While I am able to deal with it better than others, it's still very risky."
"What about your fights with the Neverseen?" Chiron questioned.
"You know about those?"
"Mr. Forkle has shown us several recordings of the Neverseen and your fights." Chiron told Sophie.
Sophie winced. "Well, for most of our fights, we play defense, trying to protect each other and others. There have been a few cases where I inflict, but that doesn't kill them. The people in the Neverseen do and have killed people, but I would say that most of them aren't sane enough to feel the guilt."
Chiron nodded then said, "Inflict? Is that another one of your abilities?"
Sophie nodded. "I have Teleportation, Inflicting, Telepathy, I'm a Polygot, and an Enhancer. Inflicting, I can inflict pain, or emotions on someone. Telepathy, I can read minds, and project my thoughts. Being a Polygot, I can translate and speak any language. Enhancers can boost other people's abilities."
Chiron nodded, taking in all of the information. Then he turned behind him, to the darkest corner. "Would you like to come out, Annabeth?"
