CHAPTER 12
'SALVATION'
✶✶━━━━━━━━━✶✶━━━━━━━━━✶✶Merle had not taken his revenge back to camp.
If anything, it was much worse.
Rowan and the others ran like hell back to camp, trying their best to get there before Merle did something dangerous. They had just made it up the hill when the deathly screams started. Shots rang out from beyond the tents, and immediately their group sprinted even faster towards the sounds. Their camp was under attack.
"Oh my god" Rowan said in shock, pushing the group forward.
"Go! Go! Go!" Glenn yelled.
The screams and shots continued as Rowan pushed forward up the hill, her eyes falling onto the complete chaos in front of her. Walkers were everywhere, attacking people from the camp. Some were already dead, screams of people being eaten to their death. There was no time to take it all in, only to fight and protect the ones that remained.
Rick had given Rowan her bag of guns to hold, and she wasted no time in reaching for a weapon. She grabbed one of her dads trusty AR's, quickly putting it into action as she aimed for the dead's ones that were overtaking the camp by the second. As soon as she started shooting, she felt herself slipping away.
The sounds of the screams slowly faded, her entire body blocking out anything aside from the urge to fight. Her breaths slowed, panic beyond her, she was completely and unbreakably focused. When it came to fight or flight, Rowan James never hesitated to fight. It was instinct, trained and learned as a young girl, she knew nothing else. It wasn't a euphoric feeling, but a complete sense of unyielding concentration. Walker after walker went down around her, until something broke her focus.
"AH MOM!!" Young Carl's voice screamed near the trailer.
"CARL!" Lori cried, pushing a walker away from herself.
Rowan turned immediately at the voice, seeing the boy crawl away from the walker grasping at his feet. Somehow, amidst all the chaos, Rick and Shane were fighting off dead ones elsewhere. Rowan didn't waste another second before firing with unnatural precision right between the walkers eyes. She raced over and help the boy scamper up quickly, his mother calling out for him as she took down a dead one.
"CARL! Oh my god" Lori cried, pulling her son into her arms.
"Thank you, thank you" she said to Rowan, the girl only nodding back in recognition.
Her adrenaline was waning, the reality of tonight slamming her in the face. Rowan loosened a breath, stumbling back slightly as she looked at the complete destruction of the camp. Bodies everywhere, people she hadn't even had the chance to meet were ripped apart and the corpse of the dead leaving a stain she would always remember.
