Chapter 5 -When Pigs Fly

In the last few weeks of the Christmas holidays before my first day back to school, I had been going through the process of finally getting a job. I had applied at a few places and attended a job interview at a small cafe called Billy Baxter's, which was within walking distance of my house. Fortunately for me, I received a call from them telling me I got the job. My first shift was on Wednesday, a couple of days after the laxative incident with Jace.

I applied a very light layer of natural makeup to my face, threw my hair up in a messy, yet appropriate bun with my side fringe hanging beside my face and put my work uniform on.

When I arrived my manager, Ben, introduced me to a few people I would be working with in my shift that night, and they all seemed quite friendly. One I particularly liked was Aaron, he was the most polite out of all my colleagues. Our break was at the same time (however Aaron's started just before mine) so we started getting to know each other at the back, and talked about anything you'd discuss when you first meet someone. Aaron was eighteen years old, just like Mark.

"So what school do you go to Skyla? Or would you prefer Sky?" Aaron questioned me as he unwrapped his muesli bar.

"Either is fine, and I go to Cedar Valley High. You?" I smiled politely and walked over to the tap to fill a glass with water.

Familiarity flashed across his face then he opened his mouth to speak, "Oh cool, I know a few people there. I go to Brunswick."

"Oh, who at my school do you know?"

"Aaron! Your break finished 5 minutes ago, Ben wants you back out there," an older boy with dark hair and stubble informed him.

"Well, I better get back to my shift." Aaron smiled and walked back out to the front desk.

"So how was your first shift, Sky?" Kate asked me as she, Aubrey and I were sitting on the oval, chewing on our sandwiches.

"It was okay thanks, sort of knew what I was doing," I laughed, "the people were quite nice. Talked to this one guy - "

"Oi Sky, Jace invited us over for dinner at around 6:30, he's cooking. Partly in celebration for the fact that he finally learnt how 'Al Dente' in pasta is actually supposed to turn out," Mark joked as he and and Jace approached our group.

I laughed and turned to Jace , "how'd your "pasta" turn out last time?"

"I may or may not have cooked it to the point where it was mushy..."Jace stated slowly then lowered his head in embarrassment.

"Mushy? It was like a firm tissue. Who cooks pasta for so long it turns into the texture of a firm tissue?" Mark taunted.

Aubrey, Kate and I laughed at Jace's stupidity.

"Oh well if that isn't the pot calling the kettle black! What about that time in Home Economics class when you accidentally left a tea towel by the stove," Jace began on his tirade, "and you freaked out even when you had three options: a sink full of water, a fire blanket, or a fricking fire extinguisher!"

"Whoa, whoa....calm down, Charlie Brown," Mark raised his arms in surrender. "That was over two years ago, I've changed."

"Into what? An intelligent human being? Pfft when pigs fly," Jace scoffed and deadpanned.

"Anyway!" I interrupted, "Jace, as much as you piss me off sometimes, I'd love to try your cooking....but to see you fail of course."

"Just you wait, Montgomery, you will be pleasantly surprised," Jace smirked as he crossed his arms.
