There was snow on the ground, the animals had all migrated or went into hibernation, their coats changed colors. Every leaf on the trees had fallen and died, leaving the branches barren, snow layered atop each branch, every tree except for the Whomping Willow. The tree guarded the secret entrance to the Shrieking Shack, where Remus Lupin was sent to spend the full moon. Because it guarded such an important place, the tree was rather violent at times.

With a pencil in hand and a thick slab of parchment, Rhylara Indigo was trying to sketch the violent tree, her hand gliding over the sheet of paper like butter to warm bread. The brunette was joined by her cat, graying in the face, his blue eyes paler than before. The cat hadn't minded the cold before, and had made a bed under a low lying bush, his tail curling around his fluffy body. Smokey was as content as he could be, sleeping under a bush in the snow.

There were pages filled with sketches of Smokey, from his years as a kitten, to his adult cat life. Rhylara adored her feline companion more than anything in the world, even more than her friends, who she cared deeply for. The Ravenclaw smiled at her work, the trunk of the Whomping Willow starting to come into shape, the branches were still wonky, but a little shading will fix that right up. Rhylara was proud of herself, tucking the pencil behind her ear.

The first week of December has been the same every year since Rhylara came to Hogwarts, without fail. The first week, lessons would be cut short on Fridays so the students could enjoy the snow, where they were free to roam the grounds of Hogwarts within reason. Many students had ventured to Hagrids to see what new creature he had stored in his house, others stayed inside and drank warm drinks around their common room fires. It wasn't uncommon to see a gathering in the library, stressed students from every house cramming in that last little bit of information before the break. After the first week, the classes would regain their normal length, and the students would endure until a week before Christmas. The winter break lasted until after New Years, but many students returned a few days after the holiday, hoping to catch a New Years party or two.

As the girl was looking over her artwork, Rhylara heard voices coming her way. The girl smiled, knowing her Marauders had come looking for her.

A very excited James could be heard, yelling about how this Quidditch season will be the best that Hogwarts had ever seen, that the parties he would throw after would be the best too. A lot of things were claimed to be better than ever with James, only about half of the things he claimed were true.

"My oh my Feathers!" James shouted, stumbling down the hill to wrap his arm around the girl's shoulder. "You sure do have your talents don't you?" He laughed, his feet slick with the thin layer of snow on the ground, his footprints were filled with others, all five Marauders standing around the girls sketch pad.
