A Great Escape

They dragged me out of bed, the same as most mornings. I'm always too exhausted to get my day started and I've become numb to their tactics so I really don't mind this as much as I used to. I'm familiar with my path, I succumb and walk my way to the room at the end of the hallway. But I feel a hand on my shoulder the whole way. They can't risk letting me go for even one second.

They shove me into the torn leather of the seat and I watch as they tighten the grips around my arms. I rest my head back, letting out a heavy sigh, knowing what to expect from them. They want to test another new serum on me. They do this every day. If it's not this room and a new needle, it's a track or a training room or an opponent.

I hear clattering to my left and close my eyes, listening to the cacophony of sounds. The metals and plastics hit each other and the rough surface of the counter. Then, I hear a loud crash.

This time the noise came from the hallway. My hallway. I hear what sounds like footsteps, making their way closer and closer to the room. The soldiers who walked me in here rush to get me out of the cuffs and further away from this apparent intruder.

The door comes swinging open and I watch as the soldiers fall to their feet just as the cuffs release from my wrists. Blood spills out onto the floor by my feet and I look out to a woman with striking red hair, who is wielding a gun.

Assessing the threat, I run out to disarm her and protect myself but I am immediately struck down by a man dressed in red, white, and blue. My head hits the ground so hard that my vision starts to fade. I watch as a man in a fully metal suit comes down to my side and picks me up. We fly through a hole they've created in the ceiling and right before I pass out, I whisper one last thing.

"Bucky."

I wake up in a dark room. It looks as though the lights have been turned off and the windows have been covered.

"I'm not going to hurt you!" I shout, hearing someone whispering... or something. It wasn't a coherent thought but I could tell they were scared of me. The darkness seemed to be an attempt to throw me off if I were to try to defend myself again.

"Do you remember me?" The strange voice asks from the shadows

"You... you were the man that took me. But you had a robotic suit."

"I'd like to think we rescued you."

"What do you mean rescued?"

Just then, the lights come on. They're bright and unsettling. I cringe, trying to hide them from my view until I can focus. I look at the man and something clicks. I definitely know him but, how?

"What do you remember?" He asks, taking a seat at the table across from me.

"Not much, honestly. They told me that I black out a lot, so my memory is pretty foggy... all the time."

"Who is 'they'?"

"Another question I don't really know the answer to. The soldiers you guys shot down, the scientists, the doctors. Everyone there had different reasons for my blackouts and my memory. But they were all taking care of me."

"They weren't." He says. His head hangs and he looks like he's got a weight on his shoulders. I don't really understand why this would bother him so much.

But to be fair, I didn't understand much about where I just came from or where I am now. Nothing makes sense to me anymore.

"I guess I need to explain some things, huh?"

"That would be nice."
