As the party kicks off into full swing, I find myself perched on a barstool next to Nat, who has been more than generous with the drinks. We talk about random things, until a young teen who appears to be around my age sidles up to us and takes a seat beside me. Nat beams and introduces us.
"Alex, this is Wanda. And Wanda, this is Alex," she says, her voice warm and friendly.
I return Wanda's smile, feeling a bit bashful.
"It's great to finally meet you! Nat's talked so much about you," she says, her voice cheerful.
I blush and smile again, feeling a bit tongue-tied. I take a sip of my drink, trying to gather my thoughts. Wanda breaks the silence with a question, her voice curious.
"So, where are you from?" she asks.
"Russia," I reply, feeling a bit more confident. "And you?"
"Sokovia," she responds.
Wanda and I chat for a while longer until Peter saunters over to us with a glint in his eye.
"Hey, you want to get out of here for a bit?" he asks, grinning at me.
I return his smile, feeling a bit of excitement bubble up inside me.
"Yeah, sure,"I reply, eager for a change of scenery.
We make our way up to the top of the tower, my heart racing as we stand in the elevator. I try to control my breathing, pushing away the memory of the nightmare that had been haunting me for weeks. As we reach the top, I can feel the cool night air on my skin, and I can't help but feel a sense of relief.
"You're not going to try and kill me, are you?" I joke.
Peter chuckles, his eyes sparkling with mischief.
"Maybe," he teases, and we both laugh.
Peter takes a seat on the ledge, and I join him, feeling a bit daring. We look out over the sprawling city below us, the lights twinkling like stars in the darkness. It's a peaceful moment, and I feel grateful for the chance to escape the noise and chaos of the party.
Suddenly, I notice Peter fiddling with his hands, his expression shifting slightly, "You alright?" I ask, sensing that something might be bothering him.
He looks up at me, his eyes softening.
"Yeah, I'm fine," he says, but there's a hint of uncertainty in his voice that makes me wonder if he's telling the truth.
Peter's words don't quite convince me, but I decide not to push him any further. We sit in silence for a while, lost in our own thoughts. Suddenly, I feel his gaze on me and I turn my head to meet his eyes. He doesn't look away, and before I can react, he leans in and kisses me.
I'm taken aback and push him away, my heart racing.
"I'm sorry, Peter," I say, my voice shaking.
I stand up and take a step back, trying to catch my breath.
Peter stands up as well, his expression confused.
"What's wrong?" he asks, looking at me with concern.
I take a deep breath, trying to gather my thoughts. "I'm gay"
