Rin
Lord Sesshomaru leads me up many stairs, passing by several houses. Each one seems vacant.
"Why are there so many empty houses?" I say, breath puffing out, walking fast to keep up with him.
He glances at me then slows his pace before gazing down the walkway, "Mother sometimes entertains. Guests stay in those rooms."
"Oh." I don't know what that means, but I suppose there will be time for me to find out at another point.
"And she gave that—Izayoi—her own room."
I stop walking. "What?"
"She gave my father's second wife a room of the castle—"
"Why would she do that?"
He shrugs, "For some reason, she liked her. I never understood it."
"She liked the woman your father left her for?"
"It is different for some yokai. My parents' union was one for power, not love. They remained friends, and my mother enjoyed gossiping about my father with my father's other wife."
I'm sure my face gives away how bizarre that sounds to me. Wait, if what his father did is considered normal... Cold trickles through me, followed a split second by a flash of rage. I turn to him, pointing my finger as I warn, "You better never do that to me!"
In answer, he leans down and gently bites my finger.
Electricity jolts through my body, the anger leaving in an instant, replaced with another hot emotion and the realization that we are very, very alone.
"I told you, no other being has held any interest for me. You are mine, and I am yours. That is the way of it."
I fold my arms, trying to act unaffected but fairly certain I'm failing, "Good. I'm glad we've covered that."
His lips quirk, "Indeed. This way, my Rin. We're almost there. In my youth, I'd orb out and fly up here in protest anytime I felt I didn't get my way."
I hide a smile, "Is that so? It's difficult to picture you being like that."
"Good. Perhaps that means I have matured. Necessary now that I am your husband."
My insides twist pleasantly at the reminder. My husband. Lord Sesshomaru chose me. He is mine.
He stops walking at the top of yet another long flight of stairs, "These are our rooms."
"Our 'rooms'?" I repeat, looking at the building in front of us.
He glances down, a slightly worried tilt to his brows, "Would you prefer to have your own, separate to mine?"
"No," I quickly deny, shaking my head empathically. "I just don't understand why we need a whole house."
"We each have sleeping and bathing areas. The two are situated on either side of a private sitting room. On the other side is a public sitting room, my study, what will become your study, and a dining area."
"But you don't eat?"
He glances away, "I needed to consume more when I was younger. I am easily sustained on far less now."
"Because you feed on life energy during battle?" It's something I'd suspected for a while now, but he'd never told me.
He glances at me, the slight widening of his eyes telling me that I surprised him. There is a guardedness to his face as he nods his head, watching for my reaction.
