December 2007
Elena Diaz had no clue what was waiting for her that day when she got off the bus.
It was a normal day for her. It was Friday, meaning her older brother, Carlos, was supposed to take her out for ice cream after dinner. It was a tradition the two developed when Carlos got his license.
Elena shut the door of her abuelos apartment.
She could hear the TV playing in the living room as she hung up her school bag.
"abuela estoy en casa!" Grandma, I'm home. Elena tended to slip into Spanish when she got home. It was what she and her mother spoke when she was little and her mom was homeschooling her.
Her grandmother didn't answer back, and it only dawned on her then how quiet the apartment was and it made her stomach drop. Normally by now her abuelos and sister were home.
BANG!
There was a gunshot and a familiar scream.
Elena's body went cold. She felt her stomach twist in knots and could feel her heart pounding painfully against her ribcage. The feeling was eerily familiar.
Then she ran into the living room where she saw a man standing over two bodies on the carpet, and she froze again. The man was so large it scared her, but it was only when he turned around that she could see the bodies.
Laying on the ground beneath him were the bodies of her grandparents.
She cried out for her grandparents, a painful ache building in her chest and stomach, and covered her mouth with a shaking hand, barely even paying attention to the large man who was now staring down at her.
The large man grabbed her upper arm with his metallic left arm. The shock of the pain and the cold metal pulled Elena's eyes from her grandparent's corpses and to the man. Her eyes widened as she looked up at the man, and what she saw only served to terrorize her further. His eyes were covered by glaring red goggles.
Her heart which was pounding rapidly, suddenly felt as if it had stopped, but instead of staying frozen her body became frenzied. Every bone and muscle in her body was buzzing as if it were being electrified.
"NO! NO! Let me go! Asesino! Déjame ir!" Murderer! Let me go!
Elena thrashed against his tight hold on her arm. Hitting his arm and screaming at him like a frightened and rabid animal fighting against a predator. If the man was affected in any way he didn't show it, only tightening his grip on her arm.
This turned Elena's fear into fury.
"LET! ME! GO!" The scream tore through her body and suddenly she could feel static in her bones. The lights in the apartment began flickering erratically with her scream apartment was shaking, and objects flying from where they were standing. Elena didn't notice what she had done, but the man did.
Everything in the apartment was rattling, and in the midst of the mayhem, a vase hit the back of the man's head. Elena only felt the release of pressure on her upper arm before her body began working and her legs were running from the man.
Her brain wasn't thinking, her body was moving on its own as she sprinted out the door and down the hall. The man stood up, chasing after the girl.
Elena ran as fast as she could down the stairs of the apartment complex, the man close behind. She was close to the bottom when suddenly she felt her hair being tugged with such power it forced her body backward.
"AHHHH!"She screamed but if anyone heard no one came. There was a hit to the back of her head, causing pain to spread across her skull as she fell to the concrete floor at the bottom of the stairs.
She heard the man say something she could not understand before her world went black.
