4 - An Eventful Morning

Once Izumi arrived at his house, he parked his bike on the wall and went inside. He opened the door with a slightly loud 'clink' sound.
"I'm home." Izumi said.
Upon entering, he saw a boy ahead of him, sitting in the living room's couch.

"Welcome back, bro." the boy said.
"Yeah, Yuu." Izumi replied.
The boy in front of him is none other than his younger brother, Nikaido Yuu.

Yuu has an average face, average athletic capabilities, and average grades. Because Izumi watches too much anime and reads too much manga, he started thinking that his brother could be a romcom protagonist. Because most of the mangas he read has average protagonists that suddenly gets a harem out of nowhere.

"Where have you been, bro?"

"Just taking a walk around town."

"Oh, is that so."

"Yeah."

After having a short conversation with his brother, Izumi walked upstairs and went inside his room.

(Haa~ I don't have anything to do tommorow, maybe I should just sleep for a whole day.)

After sorting out his thoughts, Izumi grabbed his phone and texted Mitsumi a message.

[Mi-chan, wanna go to school together on Monday?]

After a few minutes, he heard a sound notification coming from his phone. Izumi immediately grabbed it to see what it reads.

[Sorry, I can't..]

(Ha~ I guess it makes sense.) Izumi thought.

[Can you tell me the reason why?] Izumi asked.

[Because.. it's embarrassing..] Mitsumi replied.

"Fufu..." Izumi tried to hold his giggle as he saw Mitsumi's message.

[Haha, I guess that excuse passes. I'll see you on Monday, then. Bye!] Izumi texted her.

[Okay, bye!] Mitsumi messaged. Then, a moment later, another message from her appeared.
[I love you. bye!]

Izumi smiled softly after seeing her message, he then began typing on his phone.

[I love you too. Bye!]

It's Monday morning, on a street leading towards school, Izumi was walking alone as he gazed at the morning sky.

The streets were empty. Izumi left home early in the morning, so not many students walk by.
The sound leaves from the trees getting blown by the wind can even be heard.

As Izumi continued walking on the way to school, he saw a group of female first year high school students walking ahead of him.

(Hm? Isn't that Yuu's classmates? That girl at the center seems familiar.. oh, that's right! She's that girl I saw following Yuu the other day. Geez, it really is a mystery how average looking protagonists gets a harem all of a sudden in their high school romantic comedy arcs.) Izumi thought with a sigh.

After that, Izumi shifted his view from the girls towards the group of boys playing baseball on the field.

(They sure are a hard worker. Practicing this early in the morning must be exhausting. Well, I'm not the one to talk. After all, I also wake up early every morning to do my daily exercises, haha.) Izumi thought.

Then suddenly, Izumi's eyes widened. The ball that the batter hit was heading straight towards the group of first year girls at a high speed. I was flying straight towards the girl at the center.

If the girl were hit, she will definitely be injured. And for Izumi, that's not a laughing matter.

"Hey! Watch out!" Izumi warned the girls ahead of him, but when they realized it, it was too late to react.

Having no choice left, Izumi started running at full speed towards the girls and the moment the ball was about to hit the girl at the center, Izumi catched the ball with his bare hands.

The surroundings went silent after witnessing what had happened.

"Hey! sorry, are you alright!?" one of the boys playing baseball ran towards where Izumi was, asking for his condition.

The boy looks nervous, cold sweat began pouring down his spine. He thought of what would have happened if the ball wasn't catched by Izumi.

"Yeah, I'm alright." Izumi said with a smile as he tossed the ball back towards the boy.

"I'm sorry, we almost got you hurt." the boy apologized.

"No worries. Well, I'm off then. bye!" Izumi said that and he continued walking while waving his hands as if nothing had happened.

However, the girl at the center of the group, who has been silent until now, suddenly called out.
"U-umm! May I ask what  your name is? and what year you are?"

Izumi thought it was just a casual question, so he turned around and replied immediately.
"Oh, me? I'm a second year. And my name is Nikaido Izumi." Izumi said with a smile and then left.

The group of girls blushed slightly after seeing him like that, including the girl at the center.

"Nikaido... senpai.. " the girl at the center muttered quietly, so no one heard her.

Meanwhile, Izumi just continued walking on the streets.

(Woah, it was just a gamble, but I didn't think that I'd actually make it in time! Working out every morning really paid off.) Izumi thought at the back of his mind.

It was seven o'clock in the morning, most students already arrived at school. Izumi was sitting at his chair as he lean down at his desk.

Then, Mitsumi and her other friends, Kana and Shio arrived together. They passed by Izumi's seat, so Izumi called out.

"Yo! Good morning, Mi-chan!" Izumi said with a happy smile.

Kana and Shio were both shocked after hearing what Izumi just called Mitsumi. Then, they stared at Mitsumi, waiting for her reaction. They thought Mitsumi would just ignore Izumi or glare at him, but unexpectedly, to their surprise, Mitsumi replied to Izumi.

"G-good morning to you too, Izumi.." Mitsumi said shyly with her face slightly red.

A shocked expression appeared on Shio and Kana's face after seeing their best friend acting different from usual. They stared at Izumi's face and back to Mitsumi's face to find any clue on what happened to them.

However, before they could inspect further, Mitsumi continued walking and sat down on her seat.
