"You're positive that was Dart?" Lucas questioned.

We were walking in the woods as a group down the railroad tracks, where Dustin, Steve, and I had thrown the raw beef.

"Yes, he had the exact same yellow pattern on his butt," Dustin said.

"He was tiny two days ago," Max said.

"He's molted three times already," Dustin explained.

"Malted?" Steve asked.

"Molted," I corrected. "Shed his skin to make room for growth. Just like snakes do."

"When's he gonna molt again?" Max asked, irritated now.

"It's gotta be soon. When he does he'll be fully grown or close to it," Dustin said.

"Yeah, and he's gonna eat a lot more than just cats," Steve added.

Lucas stopped Dustin from walking. "Wait, a cat? Dart ate a cat?"

Everyone else stopped walking to watch the scene play out.

"No. What? No," Dustin panicked.

"What are you talking about? He ate Mews," I said.

"Mews? Who's Mews?" Max asked.

"It's Dustin's cat," Steve said, nodding to him.

"Steve!" Dustin yelled.

"I knew it! You kept him!" Lucas accused.

"No! No. No, I . . . No, I . . . He missed me. He wanted to come home," Dustin confessed with difficulty.

"Bullshit!" Lucas exclaimed.

"I didn't know he was a Demogorgon, okay?" Dustin shouted.

"Oh, so now you admit it?" Lucas argued.

"Guys, who cares? We have to go," Max said.

"We're gonna lose their trail," I said, referring to the herd of Demogorgons.

"I care!" Lucas yelled. "You put the party in jeopardy! You broke the rule of law!"

"So did you!" Dustin shouted back just as aggressively.

"What?" Lucas looked taken aback.

Steve rolled his eyes and sighed, turning away from the drama.

"You told a stranger the truth!" Dustin declared, pointing the flashlight he was carrying in Max's face.

"A stranger?" she scoffed, walking up to them.

"You wanted to tell her, too!" Lucas defended himself.

"But I didn't, Lucas, okay? I didn't tell her!" Dustin shoved Lucas in the chest.

"Oh my God, this is such bullshit," I sighed, turning to look at Steve, who wasn't even paying attention.

I snapped in front of his face. He startled and turned to look at me. He put a finger to his lips and looked back into the woods. There was a faint screeching sound in the distance I couldn't hear before.

"We both broke the rule of law, okay? So we're even, we're even!" Dustin said.

"No, no! We're not even. Don't even try that!" Lucas fired back. "Your stupid pet could've ate us for dinner!"

"That was not my fault!" Dustin managed to yell even louder.

"Guys?" Steve tried to get their attention.

"He wasn't gonna eat us!" Dustin said.

"Oh, so he was just crawling to come say hello?" Lucas said sarcastically.
