That can't be possible. I refuse to believe that I went through hell last year and El did all that work just for a group of Russians to try and open up another portal to the Upside Down.

"The gate," Dustin and Steve said simultaneously, locking eyes with each other.

My heart dropped to my stomach, a puff of breath leaving my lips.

"I don't understand, you've seen this before?" Robin asked as we frantically raced back down the stairs and back into the comms room.

"Not exactly," Steve said.

"Then what exactly?" Robin questioned further.

"That's a long story that we don't have time for," I huffed, stepping off of the last stair.

"All you need to know is it's bad," Dustin said, trailing right behind me.

Steve, Robin, and Erica reached the bottom of the steps shortly after, all of us panting heavily from the scrambling.

"It's really bad," Steve added.

"Like, end-of-the-human-race-as-we-know-it kind of bad." Dustin turned to face us.

"While I would like to sugarcoat it, he's right." I held my arm up towards Dustin to gesture to him.

"And you know about this how?" Robin asked, unconvinced.

But before anyone could answer her, Erica spoke up. "Um, Steve? Where's your Russian friend?"

All of us turned to the spot where the guard was supposedly unconscious, but he was nowhere to be found. The only sign that he had been there was a smear of blood from where Steve had hit him on the head.

Then, as if on cue, an alarm went off inside the underground building, assumably to alert people of intruders.

Steve shot into action. "Shit," he muttered, opening the door to peer into the lobby. I could see flashing red lights from where I stood behind him, and the men frantically running about, shouting instructions in Russian.

What sounded like boots hitting the floor and running towards us filled my ears, causing Steve to slam the door shut. He glanced at all of us, chaotically yelling the word "go." He seemed to do that a lot.

"Shit," I murmured, following right behind Dustin as he led us down a random hallway with everyone else trailing after. He stopped short once he took sight of the room we had stumbled across. It looked like a control room for the plasma gun, and each chair being occupied swiveled around to face us.

Steve didn't stop in time, running into me from behind. He grunted as I groaned, bending over from the impact. His arm wrapped around my stomach, pulling me upright so that my back collided with his chest.

"It's too late now, just keep going!" I screamed, snapping Dustin out of his shock. I unwrapped Steve's arm from me, bolting forward as the curly-haired 14-year-old took off into the control room.

"Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit!" Steve cursed as we rounded a corner and barreled down the stairs and into the room with the gate and the machine to crack it open.

A dozen of the guards entered right after us, splitting up to try and corner us.

Dustin screamed as he barely slipped past one of the men in the red suits. I came up right behind him. However, I was not small enough to gracefully move around this guy, so I elbowed him in the ribs, making him fall backwards over the railing.

"Sorry!" I yelled back, even though I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be able to understand me.

We came to a stop as we ran out of places to go. The five of us ended up at the edge of the grated pseudo bridges, directly next to the beam of plasma shooting out of the machine.
