My mom rushed me down the street, past the Santa Clause wearing shorts and the fake Christmas trees, behind the Pacific Ocean sparked against the hot summer heat along with a palm tree I passed many times when I came into town. As my mom was talking about a deep topic, I was barely paying attention to, we passed a man placing letters into the window.
Merry healready wrote, now beginning the next word Xmas. Oh no.
"Excuse me, but I am an English teacher," my mom said in her usual cheery but strong voice, "Xmas is neither Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays."
The man nodded at my mother, obviously not interested in fixing it. The workman then looked at me with a sympathetic look, but I just shrugged that's my mother and I was a young kid, not knowing any better.

Our house was in a small community, all of the houses looking the same, but for ours. Our neighborhood houses were decorated in Christmas lights, all but ours. My house stuck out like a sore thumb.
"So Livia," I muttered to mom after she stopped mid-story.
"Killed everyone to get the throne," my mother told me. This was her. She loved literature every aspect of it.
I nodded, agreeing with her. I loved my mom and if agreeing with her made her happy then I would nod my head at any statement she said.
The bells on the door knob rang slightly, making a clatter. My mom looked up from her frying an, toward the entry way.
"Anna is that you?" My mom called, "Are you hungry?"Anna was my older sister, she was eighteen and a rebellion growing inside of her.
"Hi mom," Anna called into the kitchen, "No thanks I already ate."
My mom quickly moved into the living room to block Anna from leaving, "You sure? I'm making tofu."
I peered into the living room watching it unfold in front of me. Anna caught my sight and I can see her begging for help. "I'm fine," she assured my mother.
Anna seemed different, more in a dream state then anything. This caught my attention luring me to the doorway.
Anna began to walk around mom, "Wait," she said stopping her, "You've been kissing."Anna soon her head, "No I haven't."
"Yes...yes you have," my mom told her.
"No I haven't," my sister argued.
"Yes you have."
"You can't tell."
My mother stepped closer, examining her lips, "Not only can I tell that you were but I can tell who, it was Dan."
My sister huffed, holding onto her jacket closer to her before trying to escape again.
"What's under your jacket?" My mother asked.
Anna was obviously didn't want to give up whatever else she wanted to keep hidden. But it was too late, my mom saw it peeking under her coat and pulled it away from her.
It was nothing like a saw before and my mom didn't like it either. A naked baby swimming after a dollar sign, but something made me gravitate to it.
"It's not fair we can't listen to music," Anna sighed.
"Honey, it's all about drugs and promiscuous sex," my mom told her.
"Nirvana is not!" My sister argued, "It's poetry."
"Poetry about drugs and promiscuous sex." My mom looked at the album cover, "Honey, just look at this. Who would ever agree to have that baby on here? Where are his parents?"
